In a rare public statement, Bob Dylan apologized to fans after a controversy involving fake autographs in a special edition sale of his book, which he considered a “mistake of judgement”.
Simon & Schuster recently offered readers the option of purchasing a special edition of Philosophy of modern song hand signed for approximately $600, accompanied by a letter from the CEO of the publisher, Jonathan Karp, certifying its authenticity.
It didn’t take long for fans who received the book to post photos of the signature on social media and realize that they were exactly the same, without the slightest detail of difference, and became suspicious.
The forgery of the signatures came to light and the publisher apologized and offered to give the money back to anyone who bought the special edition. “The limited edition book actually contains an original signature from Bob, but in replica form,” said a statement released during the week.
“I understand that there is some signature controversy on some of the limited editions of Philosophy of modern song. I’ve hand signed every print over the years and there’s never been a problem. However, I had a complicated case of vertigo in 2019 and this has continued throughout the pandemic years.”
Dylan has stressed that he needs a team of at least five people to work closely with him for this type of signing, and he has been unable to find “a safe and feasible way” to reconcile this amid the period of social isolation during the proliferation of the coronavirus.
“With contractual deadlines approaching, the idea of ​​using an automatic pen was suggested to me, along with the reassurance that this sort of thing is ‘always’ done in the world of art and literature. Using a machine was a mistake of judgment and would like to rectify it immediately. I am working with Simon & Schuster and my gallery partners to do so.
