Alocine: This video blog is not really meant to talk about his classmates, but rather to express Hortens’s deep weakness, which is bulimia. What can you tell us about that?
Ekaterine Davidzenka: I had a lot of research to understand eating disorders. Unfortunately, this is something that has affected me personally as I have friends who have been hospitalized for these disorders. So I saw and experienced it up close.
First of all, I chose not to make this item banal, beautiful or even sexy. I did not want to be counterproductive about it. This is why we are going to see a gradual deterioration of character, even physical.
We can already see on the screen that he is a little more excavated, a little worse, slightly pale, less dressed. Minus everything. In fact it was a will. First of all, I did not want to tell people that she was bulimic but beautiful. That was not the goal at all. It was important for me to defend this topic correctly and as realistically as possible.
Independently and with some help I decided to lose weight to have a more blurred look on the screen as the episodes continued. The frame, at all, is not made in a hurry, and especially not for multiplication alone.
I had this plot in hand a few months ago. So I was able to start some sort of process for my character.
Hortense is a pretty well surrounded character. Why deprive yourself of videos and not friends?
Because bulimia is a disease that makes us feel ashamed of ourselves for many things. There is a deep psychological weakness that affects the physical. This is something we just do not talk about because we are ashamed. And when you are deeply ashamed of something, even the people closest to you do not know it. The problem is here.
Hortens is ashamed, but he is also an ostrich. I think he knows he has a problem, but you will see it later, he often says it is shameful and disgusting. These are strong and very harsh words. This is not what you can imagine. It is very difficult to get there.
Mehdi (Marvin Pellegrino) does not know about all this. What are the consequences of their relationship?
At Hortense this problem is not new, it just had to be controlled before. In fact, it is a concern he had when he was young and which he overcame but which still reappeared in his life last year. The problem is that it may take eight months or even a year before certain physical properties become hollow. In fact it is very slow.
Even if Mehdi hides, he is still a couple to Hortens and I think he is unconsciously angry at him. Not so much. Anyway, at least I did not go down without explaining myself first. We know Mehdi, he is very ambitious. He tries to show all the love he has for Hortens, but he is a character who surpasses him a bit. The fact that he could not see his illness also means a lot.
Can we say that their relationship is in danger?
If there will be videos all over the institute, there will definitely be videos on it as well. What will be his reaction? What will be his reaction to Hortens’s illness? How do you understand the situation? This is to be considered.
Through your character, the series often touches on strong social topics. Last year, Hortense was at the heart of the “Sugar Daddy” screenplay, which explored youth escorts. Recently, we saw that she was supporting Mehdi in her fight against cancer and today, Hortens is going to find out about her bulimia. As an actor, is it important for you to discuss topics that are important to you in prime time?
Ბեւրի. This is something that is really close to the heart. Every time I am given a subject, I work on it long, wide and wide. I will definitely tell and understand so that I can copy the subjects as well as possible and possibly provoke the necessary awareness. Will there be a parent who might pay more attention to what is happening in their children’s lives. There will be young people who write letters and tell me that it somehow “saved” them from depression. This is very important to me.
That’s why I’m doing this job. Sure, it’s nice and enjoyable to play love or romantic scenes, but for me the most important thing is that it has a purpose, a sound, a stir. That there are some things that will be taken into account and may be discussed later.
Eating disorders, unfortunately, are the subject of our time. Many suffer from this, very few know about it, and even fewer tell it until it’s too late. It was a great honor to defend this.
Last year we had the opportunity to see Hortens’s father. Do the writers plan to return to his parents in the future?
ᲩWe could. His father is a doctor, most likely.
After this story, which is dedicated to your character, a new catastrophe will arise where everything begins. What can you tell us about the institute graduation?
Not so much. I was so focused on the nature and theme of bulimia and eating disorders that I did not pay much attention to what happened next. I have not been there much.
Do you have any other projects besides starting everything you want to tell us about?
Little things arise. I have various personal art projects. I am organizing an exhibition of paintings on the theme of emotions. This is an exhibition scheduled for the end of the year. I’m working on it now, as well as on my book.
