China launches Shenzhou-15 mission, bringing new astronauts to Tiangong station


The Shenzhou-15 mission crew arrived at Tiangong Station. They joined the Shenzhou-14 crew, for a total of 6 Chinese astronauts in space.

This Tuesday (29), China launched the Shenzhou-15 mission, which brought three more astronauts to the new space station. tianngong🇧🇷 The launch took place in the early afternoon with a Long March 2F rocket, which started from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center platform in the Gobi desert. The docking maneuver between the spacecraft and the station was completed at 18:42 (Brasilia time).

You taikonauts Fei Junlong, Deng Qingming and Zhang Lu were welcomed by crew members Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe Shenzhou-14 mission who have already six months on board the station. The new astronauts will use supplies brought to the station by the Tianzhou-5 cargo mission, which launched to Tiangong in early November. This is the first time crew members from several Chinese missions have met in space.

Fei was selected as one of China’s first-generation astronauts in 1998 and flew his first space mission in 2005 as mission commander of the Shenzhou 6 outer space mission. Finally, Zhang Lu is part of China’s second astronaut class and was selected in 2010.

“Although we are the oldest crew members compared to the average age, we are confident in our abilities as we are still ‘young’,” Fei said. “Today, I am extremely proud and excited to go to space again for my country,” she added during a press conference on Monday (28).

Shenzhou-15 is the latest mission in a series of 11 planned launches to build the station structure and bring its systems and components to full operation. Tiangong station was recently completed with the release of the Mengtian moduleand should remain permanently employed for at least a decade.
