Have you ever heard of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? Different countries of the world are working right now to solve the problems facing all nations. Just like entrepreneurs, anyone can help in this work by investing in ideas that are in line with development goals.
The first step for anyone who is idealizing a startup is to look at the real needs of the market and think of an alternative to cure these pains. Much more than creating a profitable business, entrepreneurship can also engage in social issues.
But how do the SDGs apply to startups? The SDGs represent huge potential markets where there are real problems to solve. However, there is a lack of good solutions to actually fix them. In short, entrepreneurs can focus their business ideas on solving the SDGs. Therefore, I have mentioned a few tips where startups can take action on each of the 17 Goals to Transform the World by 2030. Check them out:
1. Eradication of poverty – End poverty in all its forms, everywhere.
The role of startups: engaging in projects that teach entrepreneurship; Promote social, green, solidarity enterprises and the inclusive economy; Creating accessible technologies for the poorest populations.
2. Zero hunger and sustainable agriculture – End hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
The role of startups: Increase research for the production of healthy foods; Reduce the prices of nutritious foods; Train the workforce in basic food preparation; Create innovative ways to enable access to expert knowledge to distant farmers;
3. Health and Wellness – Ensure healthy living and promote well-being for all, at all ages
The role of startups: Creation of technologies aimed at physical and mental health; Sustain a healthy environment for its employees; Encourage the creation of programs that support healthy activities.
4. Quality education – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The role of startups: Create educational platforms accessible to the simplest population; Create and improve basic school equipment; Reinventing teaching and reading material in other formats; Develop technology-based programs to train public school teachers; Create mechanisms that allow access to libraries, video libraries or play libraries in communities, schools or social organizations.
5. Gender equality – Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Create opportunities for the inclusion of female workers in alternative activities considered male; Training of women for management positions; Strengthen the importance of fairness in teams, through clear and enforceable policies.
6. Drinking water and sanitation – Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
The role of startups: Create solutions and programs to rationalize the use of water; Making operational tools to preserve and revitalize the water system and able to permanently monitor the reservoirs.
7. Cheap and clean energy – Ensuring reliable, sustainable, modern and affordable access to energy for all.
The role of startups: Reduce energy consumption; Develop solutions able to improve energy efficiency; Develop technologies for the constant maintenance of equipment.
8. Decent work and economic growth – Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
The role of startups: Support solutions that involve professional improvement; Promote entrepreneurship education; Offer technologies that increase the productivity of companies.
9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
The role of startups: creating businesses that can reduce company inventories; Reduce waste in the production process; Promote process automation; Stimulate the use of applications to increase productivity; Optimize the use of natural resources.
10. Reduction of inequalities – Reduce inequalities within and between countries.
The role of startups: investing in projects that analyze and improve the infrastructure of the suburbs; Including women and the elderly in the digital age; Promote the rights of immigrants and other minorities in all environments, including the startup itself.

The role of startups: discovering new ways to reduce the consumption of polluting products; Contribute to the use of renewable fuels; Stimulate the use of applications to control noise pollution and other pollution; Support the control of emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide and other polluting gases
14. Aquatic life – Conserve and promote the sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
The role of startups: Creation of technology to denounce people/companies that throw waste into rivers; Investigate new ways to improve sanitation in cities; Support solutions that promote the proper disposal of cooking oil.
15. Terrestrial life – Protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt loss.
The role of startups: to encourage the purchase of certified raw materials; Install less polluting equipment; Encourage agriculture to make use of technology, both in crop rotation and agricultural planting; or in projects to reduce desertification and land degradation.
