In “Wednesday” the ones excluded from Nevermore Academy are boys with special abilities or monsters, but like any school there are popular groups, extracurricular activities and competitions.
During the first season of the Netflix series, it was possible to see how the Poe Cup was held at Nevermore Academy, in honor of one of the institution’s most outstanding students: Edgar Allan Poe.
The Weems-supervised cup in “Wednesday” consists of crossing a river by canoe to an island and retrieving each team’s flag from a cache. The team that returns first with their flag is the winner.
But not only is the cup named after Edgar Allan Poe, but the prolific horror writer’s influence can be seen in every detail of the competition, such as the name and design of each ship the students use.

Merlina and Enid’s Black Cat
The protagonist of the series is persuaded by her friend Enid Sinclair to enter the Poe Cup, with the ship called El Gato Negro, which is inspired by an 1843 horror short story.
In the play, an alcoholic man kills his first cat, then finds another black cat, and when he accidentally kills it, kills his wife, so he tries to hide her body inside the walls of his basement.
However, the cat also gets trapped between the walls and causes the man’s guilt and madness to increase. When the police finally arrive to investigate, they discover the woman’s body due to the cat’s noises.
The barrel of amontillado of the mermaids
In the series, the red ship with the mermaids’ colored diamonds is called The Barrel of Amontillado, a reference to Poe’s work of the same name.
The students are dressed as buffoons because in the story Montresor’s character seeks out Fortunato, who is dressed as a buffoon, to take revenge on him and takes advantage of the carnivals in 19th century Italy to get him drunk and chain him in a warehouse. .
Besides referring to the character’s attire, the jester hats worn by the mermaids are also useful, as they cover the snakes on their heads and prevent them from turning people to stone.
The golden beetle of the mermaid
Merlina’s rival at Nevermore Academy and winner of previous cups is the popular mermaid Bianca. She and her companions race in a yellow-and-black canoe called The Golden Beetle, like the 1843 story.
The mystery story in “The Gold Bug” is set in the 18th century and concerns a treasure hunt on Sullivan’s Island in South Carolina. But to find it, you have to crack the code found on a golden beetle.
This is how mermaids show their fighting spirit and also with the golden color they represent the brightness and glamor that characterizes them.
The Vampire Pit and Pendulum
The young vampires in the competition use a purple ship called The Pit and the Pendulum, which also includes axes like those used by executioners in beheadings.
The story of the 1842 short story tells of a man wrongfully sentenced to death, who is locked in a cell that has a bottomless pit in the center and a sharp pendulum that slowly falls.
Acting as executioners, the show’s vampires take advantage of hoods to shield themselves from the sun during the competition. As their species is historically known as assassins, this story choice is perfect for them.
