Cup summary: Morocco eliminate Spain and Portugal struggle with C.Ronaldo on the bench; Tuesday in Qatar

The Moroccans and the Portuguese will face off next Saturday, at noon (Brasilia time), at the Al Thumama stadium

On the Tuesday that closed all matches in the round of 16 of the World Cup, Morocco was the big surprise. The Africans neutralized Spain, drew 0-0 in regular and extra time and defeated Luis Enrique’s team on penalties. The Moroccans eliminated one of the favorites for the title and advanced, for the first time in history, to the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

Morocco’s next opponent, Africa’s sole representative in Qatar, will be Portugal, who beat Switzerland 6-1 at the Lusail Stadium, under the genius of young striker Gonçalo Ramos. At the age of 21, the Benfica player was chosen by Fernando Santos to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, who was placed on the bench at the Portuguese coach’s choice.

Ramos scored three goals and became one of the youngest Portuguese players to score in a World Cup.

Results of the matches of Tuesday 6 December

Morocco 0 (3) x (0) 0 Spain

In a historic game, Morocco eliminated Spain, on penalties, and is in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar for the first time in history. The classification came after a goalless draw with the favorites this Tuesday at the Education City Stadium. The Moroccans are the only African team remaining in the tournament. The Spaniards missed all their penalties and saw goalkeeper Bounou take two penalties. With the 3-0 defeat on the edge, La Roja maintains a 12-year taboo without making it past the round of 16.

Portugal 6 x 1 Switzerland

Football, its magical and unexpected scripts. On the day when coach Fernando Santos dared and decided to exclude Cristiano Ronaldo, leaving the star player on the bench for 74 minutes, it was the turn of the young substitute, Gonçalo Ramos, only 21 years old and up to that moment on the pitch for only 33 minutes with the Portuguese, who took center stage in the 6-1 win against Switzerland at the Lusail Stadim, with a hat-trick. With the Benfica boy’s impressive win and three goals, the Portuguese stamped last place in the quarter-finals, to face surprising Morocco at noon on Saturday.
