Palmeiras won their 11th Brazilian league title this season. This Wednesday, however, the club celebrates 53 years of one of the successes that marked the historic winner of the Verdão.
On 7 December 1969, Palmeiras beat Botafogo 3-1 to win the final round of that year’s competition, also known as the Torneo Roberto Gomes Pedrosa.
Palmeiras’ goals in that game were all scored in the first stage, by Ademir da Guia (twice) and César Maluco. Botafogo still discounted in the second half with Ferretti.
The title came in dramatic fashion, as Palmeiras also needed to cheer on Corinthians’ loss to Cruzeiro. However, the Minas Gerais team could not achieve a more elastic score than the victory of Verdão. While Cruzeirenses won 2-1, Palmeiras was able to celebrate their victory on goal difference.
Also in the final quadrangular, Palmeiras drew 0-0 with Corinthians and, in the sequence, was drawn again with Cruzeiro, this time at 1-1. Already in the first phase, Palmeiras imposed itself as leader of the Group B, with 19 points. The team had a campaign of nine wins, one draw and six losses.
The 1969 title was the fourth Brazilian for Palmeiras, who had already been champions of the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa in 1960 and 1967 and the Taça Brasil in 1967. This achievement was also marked as the First Academy’s last.
Furthermore, some important names from the Second Academy, such as Leão and Luís Pereira, were already part of the squad and were taking their first successful steps in the club.
After this title, Palmeiras won the Brazilian championship seven more times. Most recently this year, when Abel Ferreira’s side had a solid season and led the competition from the 10th round to retain the cup.
