The definitive guide to the Spider-Man movies by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland.
‘Spider-Man’: No Way Home’ fulfilled the dreams of a whole generation of Spider-Man fans. Seeing the Spideys of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland on the screen together was a gift from Marvel to its fans, almost 20 years after Sam Raimi directed one of the first great superhero blockbusters and one of the most popular films. box office hits in history.
But 20 years, although it seems like yesterday to many, is a lifetime for others. And younger viewers may be a bit baffled and confused by the three Spider-Mans, wondering if they have to watch the “old” movies (how weird this sounds to me) in release order or chronological order, who are they? those villains that appear in the new movie and seem to know each other, what is the origin story of these heroes, their friends and their MJs…
Well, we are going to make the process easier for you with a brief guide to Marvel’s Spider-Man, leaving out other adaptations that (for the moment) remain outside the MCU canon, such as the “Spiderverse” of ‘Spider-Man: A New Universe. ‘ and its sequel, the animated series among which the one from the 90s stands out, the Japanese Spider-Man (‘Supaidaman’), the Turkish one (‘3 Dev Adam’) and the trilogy of telefilms from the 70s starring Nicholas Hammond.
Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man
After the character’s rights were thrown around by various companies and projects, with Tobe Hooper about to direct an adaptation for the mythical production company Cannon and James Cameron interested in his own adaptation, it was finally Sony Pictures (Columbia) that took the prize. cat to water and for such a task he chose Sam Raimi, master of fantastic cinema and responsible for cult films such as ‘Infernal Possession’ and ‘Darkman’.
To give life to Peter Parker, the winner was Tobey Maguire, a young star in the making who came to amaze in ‘The Cider House Rules’. Kirsten Dunst (‘The Virgin Suicides’) became Peter’s love interest, Mary Jane Watson, and Willem Dafoe was the terrifying villain Green Goblin/Norman Osborn. James Franco, who originally auditioned for the lead role, ultimately landed on the role of Harry Osborn, the best friend (and later enemy) of Peter Parker.
‘Spider-Man’ (2002)
Peter Parker is an introverted student who lives with his uncles after the death of his parents in an accident. On a school field trip to a genetic laboratory, Peter is bitten by one of the spiders from an experiment and begins to develop superhuman powers: super strength, being able to climb walls, throw webs… While he gets used to his new powers, he uses them to try to impress Mary Jane and to get money, but his recklessness causes him to let a thief escape who, in the end, will be the culprit of the death of his Uncle Ben (the famous author of “With great power comes great responsibility”).
On the other hand, the businessman Norman Osborn has been the victim of a failed experiment that has left him with an evil double personality, the Green Goblin, and begins to kill his competitors.
‘Spider-Man 2’ (2004)
Two years later, Peter has focused on his work as a superhero and has distanced himself from his friends. Harry is now head of genetic research at Oscorp, his late father’s company, and funds the experiment of Peter’s mentor Otto Octavius, who plans to build himself an exoskeleton of robotic arms. The experiment obviously goes wrong. Octavius becomes the villain Doctor Octopus and Spider-Man already has a new villain.
Mary Jane is engaged to an astronaut, and Peter becomes depressed and loses his powers. But he gets them back when Mary Jane is kidnapped (again) by Doctor Octopus to lure Spider-Man on Harry’s orders.
‘Spider-Man 3’ (2007)
Peter Parker seems to have redirected his life. Everything is going well for him, people love Spider-Man and he plans to propose to Mary Jane. But everything gets complicated. A meteorite has brought an alien symbiote to Earth and Flint Marko, the real killer of Uncle Ben, has suffered an accident and has become the Sandman. At least, though Harry is still seeking revenge at first, he then hits himself on the head and temporarily forgets about it. One less problem.
The symbiote fuses with Spider-Man’s suit and begins to transform Peter into a more arrogant, violent and selfish man, which drives Mary Jane away. Peter ends up realizing it and gets rid of it, but the alien finds a new ally in reporter Eddie Brock, whom he turns into Venom. Venom and Arne’s Man kidnap Mary Jane. AGAIN.
‘Spider-Man 4’: The Sequel That Never Happened
‘Spider-Man 4’ was launched in 2008, with Sam Raimi once again leading the project and Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst reprising their roles in what was to be the start of a new trilogy. The new characters were going to be The Lizard (Dylan Barker), The Vulture (John Malkovich), Mysterio (Bruce Campbell) and The Vulturess / La Gata Negra (Anne Hathaway).
After several script rewrites and disputes between Sony and Sam Raimi over the delay of the release date, the project was canceled in 2010.
The Reboot: Andrew Garfield’s ‘Amazing Spider-Man’
After canceling the Raimi saga, Sony decided to do a reboot of the character with a new origin story and a whole new cast. Andrew Garfield (‘The Social Network’) became the new Peter Parker, while his love interest fell to Emma Stone (‘Maids and Ladies’). Dan Dehaan was the new Harry Osborn while Jamie Foxx became the villainous Electro in the sequel.
‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ (2012)
Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically modified spider, and starts all over again. The young man allies with an old partner of his father, Dr. Connors, to try to make a serum that regenerates the human body, but (oh, surprise) the experiment goes wrong and Dr. Connors becomes the villain The Lizard. . Ah, Uncle Ben dies again too.
While adjusting to his powers, building a suit and making the web shooter, Peter falls in love with Gwen Stacy, his first love, who quickly discovers his secret identity and helps him defeat The Lizard.
‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Power of Electro’ (2014)
Peter befriends Harry Osborn, the heir to Oscorp (which we already know how it will end). At the same time, a company employee has an accident in a tank with genetically modified electric eels (seriously) and becomes the villain Electro.
Spider-Man faces off against the new Green Goblin and Electro, but is unable to save Gwen in the process.
After this film, he had planned a spin-off of ‘The Sinister Six’, a group of villains who would face Spider-Man together, but it was cancelled.
Spider-Man arrives at the MCU with Tom Holland
Sony and Marvel reached a historic agreement to include Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time alongside superheroes such as Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America…
This time the origin, already hackneyed, was skipped, and actor Tom Holland (‘The Impossible’) debuted in a supporting role in 2016 in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, giving a preview of what would be his first film in lonely a year later.
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (2017)
In a more adolescent tone, the new Peter Parker has the usual problems of a high school kid who likes a girl (MJ – Zendaya) and has his insecurities, but to all that we must add that he is Spider-Man.
To all this, a contractor finds alien technology in the aftermath of the Chitauri attack of ‘Avengers’ and a blasting armor is manufactured, becoming The Vulture (Michael Keaton). Peter tries to defeat him on his own to prove to Tony Stark that he is worthy of joining the Avengers, but he will end up needing his help.
‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ (2019)
After participating in the events of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Peter Parker tries to get back on track with a high school trip across Europe with his friends. But despite his efforts to live a normal life, work beckons. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) forces him to fight the “Elementals”, a group of monsters of water, fire and sand that terrorize the world.
A new hero, Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), seems to relieve Peter of his responsibilities, but hides a dark past…
‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021)
Mysterio revealed Peter Parker’s secret identity as Spider-Man before disappearing, accusing him of his death. Peter, to prevent the damage this revelation is doing to his loved ones, I turn to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a spell that will make the world forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. But, but, buuuut: IT GOES WRONG.
Instead, what it causes is the multiverse to be torn apart and Spider-Man’s villains from other universes to come to this one, causing chaos. Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Thomas Haden Church’s The Sandman, Rhys Ifans’ The Lizard and Jamie Foxx’s Electro fully enter the UCM recovering the characters from all the previous Spider films -Man. And, if there are villains from other Spider-Mans, what better way to fight them than to go to… The other Spider-Mans!
Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parkers join forces in a final battle for the salvation of all universes.
