One in four people have been fired because of age.

Ageism continues to take its toll: one in four professionals has already been fired due to age. This is what the search performed by job vacancies.com🇧🇷 Collective And Senior talent🇧🇷 According to the survey, 24% of workers lost their jobs because they were considered older.

The purpose of the “Etarism” survey, according to its organizers, was to give visibility to the scenario, challenges and opportunities in hiring people discriminated against on the grounds of age.

“It is unacceptable that even today mature professionals are fired on grounds of age, a completely discriminatory act. Even with the warming market, these professionals still suffer from bias,” says Cris Sabbag, CDO of Talento Sênior.

“This is the group of professionals that has grown the most and where the highest unemployment rate is concentrated. Labels attached to mature professionals that do not correspond to reality are still repeated and invalidate the experience and contributions that mature professionals can add to the business.

According to Cris, ageism does not correspond to the current awareness of diversity.

“Firing a professional based on their level of seniority does not correspond to the transformational moment that companies are going through, increasingly adopting diversity and inclusion programs. It is necessary to promote interaction between the different generations. More diverse environments are more than proven to lead to better financial outcomes,” she adds.

Workplace awareness

The survey sought to find out whether the company where the HR professional works has hired anyone over 50 in the past six months. The majority (58%) responded positively to 42% negative. On the other hand, 81% declared that the company in which they work has not promoted any program for the recruitment of people over 50 in the last year against 19% of affirmative answers.

“The survey showed that the vast majority of companies do not take actions that change the scenario of exclusion for older people. This raises an alert point about the need for contractors to know about the subject. We see that there are great opportunities for improvement for inclusion in the labor market,” says Renan Batistela, diversity and inclusion specialist at Vagas.com.
