Jersey Emergency Services said on Sunday that their search and rescue operation after an explosion at an apartment building on the island was now a recovery mission, a possible indication that there are unlikely to be any other survivors of the blast.
Three people were confirmed dead and police said about dozens more were still missing after an explosion early Saturday morning at an apartment building on the island of Jersey off the northern coast of France.
“We have three confirmed deaths. And I think it’s fair to say we expect to find more. We previously said it would probably be around a dozen,” Jersey Police Chief Robin Smith told a news conference.
“You’ll understand how difficult it is to make that assessment. But that’s a number that we hope not to hit, but it’s the number that we’re working with.”
The three-story building, located near the port of the island’s capital, St. Helier, completely collapsed in the explosion, which occurred just before 1 am (Brasilia time) on Saturday.
