The master of ceremonies can benefit from the resumption of face-to-face activities; expert explains the skills of this professional
After the restrictive measures to control the Covid-19 pandemic hit 97% of companies in the event sector, which failed to earn around 230 billion reais in 2020 and 2021, the expectation of recovery was canceled this year. Of the 2,147,600 jobs created in Brazil between January and September, 229,437 were in the sector pole and 14,262 specifically in the events area, which represents a growth of 10.7% and 0.7% respectively. The data comes from the Economic Radar, a survey carried out by Abrape (Brazilian Association of Event Promoters).
The sectoral hub of the segment involves 6.2 million people from 52 areas. Among these are accommodation facilities, tourist agencies and security companies. Among the job opportunities that are opening up in the area, master of ceremonies is one of them. The origin of the craft is uncertain, but currently this type of professional hosts public and private events.
Unlike the ceremonialist, who organizes the event, the master of ceremonies takes care of conducting the meeting from the beginning to the end, always interacting with the public. “He welcomes the audience and does all the sewing of what will happen, with some prior knowledge of the content,” says Bruno Motta, comedian and company master of ceremonies.
To work on the territory it is necessary to apply techniques of presentation, posture and diction. A professional level of formality needs to be maintained, but a shift in this direction has been noted. As part of a final project for Technologist in Events, then student João Carlos Meirelles Coutinho identified that the more formal profile of the master of ceremonies is giving way to a more dynamic and interactive presentation. Furthermore, research points out that, in certain cases, the master of ceremonies does not necessarily have to have the gift of oratory, but charisma and preparation.
The comedian Motta supports this thesis. “It’s important that he has experience and charisma. Companies have a growing demand for ‘casualty’ at events,” he says. According to him, with humor it is possible to “make everything part of the show”, including unforeseen problems.
This means that the territory also requires professional disinhibition and the ability to deal with extraordinary situations. «It is the master of ceremonies who will solve the unexpected, whether they are technical, delays, absences», says Motta.
“With the advancement of technology, many speakers and guests from abroad can now participate online, but technology doesn’t always help and the guest doesn’t show up. At that time you have to create, talk to the participants and stay on content, until when the connection is not ready, and sometimes doing it without showing that it was a problem”, reinforces the comedian and master of ceremonies.
The more than 14,000 new core jobs in the events sector, identified in the Abrape survey, include events organization activities, arts, creative and entertainment activities, cultural and environmental heritage activities, leisure and recreation activities, production and promotion of sporting events. Compared to the same period in 2021, the result is 337% higher: 3,265 new jobs were registered.
