The game “Death Stranding”, developed by Hideo Kojima and released in 2019, will be adapted for cinema. Kojima himself is overseeing the adaptation, in collaboration with producer Alex Lebovici (horror “Brutal Nights”).
In the storyline of the game, society has been fractured after a cataclysmic event called the ‘Death Stranding’, which opened a gateway between the living and the dead and allowed supernatural creatures to roam the shattered world.
Holding the disconnected remnants of humanity’s future in his hands, protagonist Sam Bridges embarks on a quest to bring hope and connect the last survivors of a decimated America.
“Death Stranding” featured an all-star cast, who not only lent their voices to the characters, but their faces as well.
The protagonist is played by Norman Reedus (“The Walking Dead”) and the cast still includes Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”), LĂ©a Seydoux (“007 – No time to die”), Guillermo del Toro (“The of trivia”) and Margaret Qualley (“Maid”). It was unclear whether the game’s cast would return for the film adaptation.
Lebovici is producing and financing the film through his production company, Hammerstone Studios.
“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” said Kojima. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them to bring ‘Death Stranding’ to the big screen.”
“We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to collaborate with the brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation,” Lebovici added. “Unlike other big-budget game adaptations, this one will be much more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a game adaptation can be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic ‘Hideo production ‘ by Kojima”. .
The movie ‘Death Stranding’ does not have a release date yet.
Kojima is a world famous game creator. Following his success with the “Metal Gear” franchise at Konami, he launched his own studio in 2015, Kojima Productions, and in 2020 received the BAFTA Fellowship, the highest award given by BAFTA to an individual in recognition of outstanding contribution to movies, games or television.
The game “Death Stranding” received several gaming awards upon its debut on PlayStation and was followed in September 2021 by “Death Stranding Director’s Cut”, an improvement to the gameplay experience, offering more action, expanded areas, extended stories and an exclusive Strand Social System, which allows people from all over the world to connect through in-game actions.
The sequel, “Death Stranding 2”, was announced last week and is in development for the PlayStation 5 console, with Kojima himself as writer, director, producer and designer.
