THE Microsoft must resurrect the Skype with unprecedented resources, such as simultaneous voice translation, and a much-needed visual modernization. The service that revolutionized internet calling in the 2000s will return as a more casual chat app to distance itself from the corporate footprint of Teams.
The look of the new Skype is very different from the familiar boxy format. New themes will be offered as well as the ability to customize the color scheme of the program, including support for high contrast for the visually impaired.
The result of the renovation is a design that blends the style of Whatsapp with just a few taps of Teams and Meet. Expect to have a much nicer layout cleanwith separate tabs for features and dark mode support.
Renewed Skype experience
Forget pretty much all Skype concepts, because this zombie was reborn completely different. According to the Redmond giant, this should be the “best video calling experience” for mobile phones. A bold definition for an equally ambitious product.
Call participants will be able to insert custom backgrounds if they don’t need to hide the clutter behind the camera image. The idea is basically to offer the most features that compete Google However, Meet and Zoom have a strong appeal for the mobile market.
The developers ensure a real-time translation tool to facilitate calls in any language. The app will automatically detect the spoken language and start transcribing the audio into text.

The app will have a tab called Today (Today, in Portuguese) which should display news and articles from reliable sources to keep the user informed. According to Microsoft, it will be possible to read the contents in the application itself, without having to be guided to the bing to log in, as the company usually does in Windows, for example.
This informative content will be selected by the curator team and should be viewed in the Stories format. Anyone who wants to know more can click the button to view the content directly there, without redirection or subscription.
Technical improvements have been made to optimize performance and offer more stability in video calls. The company intends to add more adjustments in the future, though it didn’t mention which ones, to make this experience even better.
When is the new Skype coming?
Anyone who has used Skype in the past will be able to use the same account to log in and keep in touch. For now, Microsoft hasn’t revealed an official release date for Skype. Anyone signed up for the software testing program, Skype Insiders, should get the revitalized app to try out early.
For those who thought the program was buried after the success of Teams, like this writer, Microsoft is already wrong: Skype is better than ever. It remains to be seen whether the promises will be kept and, above all, whether the user will be willing to return to the late VoIP calling program.
