Barbie Wins Trailer Referencing 2001: A Space Odyssey; look

Barbiedirector Greta Gerwig’s new feature film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, released its first teaser trailer this Friday (16th), revealing images from the film of the world’s most famous doll.

The video makes a direct reference to one of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history, from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, a science fiction masterpiece by director Stanley Kubrick. With that, Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig makes it clear: This isn’t going to be a live-action Barbie movie like any other.

The reference to the trailer occurs immediately, connecting to the opening scene of 2001, in which the monkeys discover the monolith in a prehistoric setting. In case of Barbie, children play with dolls in the shape of a child. Until the Barbie doll appears, captivating the girls, who destroy their old dolls. Even the soundtrack will be familiar to anyone who has seen the 1968 film.

Despite the fun reference to the film classic, the teaser trailer doesn’t reveal much beyond showing Margot Robbie’s Barbie in a black and white striped bathing suit that recalls the first version of the doll from the 1950s, and some quick scenes of ball in which Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken appear in different looks.

Barbie arrives in Brazilian cinemas in July.
