After years of waiting, Avatar: The Way of Water finally debuted, bringing the sequel to director James Cameron’s 2009 hit. With the film in theaters, and so much hype about the values that the very expensive production must reach in order to turn a profit, the box office numbers are very relevant.
Opening weekend projections were $450 million, but Avatars 2 it failed to hit its mark, despite getting close. The film grossed $435 million globally in the United States and 52 other markets, including China.
If the expected value is reached, Avatar: The Way of Water could have surpassed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswhich had the biggest opening weekend of the year with $442 million.
The film has made $134 million at the U.S. box office to date, as well as $301 million in other markets. Produced on a reported budget of $400 million, Cameron recently revealed this Avatar: The Way of Water it would probably have to finish as “the third or fourth biggest movie” in history to pay for itself, which would translate into roughly $2 billion in global earnings.
The first avatars it remains the highest-grossing film in history, grossing more than $2.9 billion worldwide. Despite its success, the 2009 film got off to a relatively low start, earning $241 million globally within five days of release.
Unlike most Hollywood films in the post-pandemic era, Avatar: The Way of Water managed to land immediately in China, where it underperformed on Sunday with an estimated $57 million, as the film was originally expected to make $100 million just upon its opening in the country. This can largely be attributed to a new wave of Covid-19-related closures.
Government sanctions and an increasingly lucrative local market have made imports rare in recent years: the only major Hollywood film released in China this year was Jurassic World: Domain, which grossed over $150 million there. The first Avatar grossed a combined $200 million in China over the years (including re-releases), and a recent report by Variety projected a final tally of more than $350 million for the sequel.
Although it was slightly below the projection, Avatar: The Way of Water has potential for growth at the box office, mainly due to the absence of major releases to compete with James Cameron’s feature film, with the next release only mid-February with the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania🇧🇷
