Timão is the club that has the highest number of repatriated players in Serie A of Brazilian football
Ángel Romero was Corinthians’ first reinforcement for 2023, and the arrival of the 30-year-old athlete demonstrates Timão’s recent reputation for bringing back players who already had some history at the Parque São Jorge club.
With the Paraguayan striker, Alvinegro is the club with the most recaptures in Brazilian football’s Serie A. Fábio Santos, Gil, Balbuena, Maycon, Paulinho, Renato Augusto and Romero are the players from the squad who have been repatriated in recent years.
The board’s goal in recent seasons has been not to invest large sums in negotiations to stop the club’s debt, but the rehiring of these medallions was a market opportunity, considering that Timão mainly paid salaries.
The first repatriated player on the list was defender Gil, who after three years defending the colors of Shandong Luneng, left the Chinese team and returned to Corinthians in 2019. Since then he has been an absolute starter in the Corinthians defence.
In October 2020, Timão announced the return of Fábio Santos. The left-back was sold to Mexico’s Cruz Azul in 2015, and spent four seasons at Atlético-MG before accepting his termination and returning to the club’s Parque São Jorge. At 37 he renews his contract for the last year of his career.
One of the main signings of the management of president Duílio Monteiro Alves was the return of Renato Augusto. The negotiations dragged on for a few weeks, but the midfielder managed to close with Beijing Guoan, from China, and despite the injuries, he was decisive in both 2021 and 2022.
Another popular signing was the return of Paulinho, one of the main idols of Corinthians and responsible for very important moments for the Corinthians fans, especially in 2012. After terminating his contract with Al Ahli, from Saudi Arabia, and a long period of negotiations and waiting, Timão has confirmed Paulinho as his first reinforcement for 2022. In May, the number 15 tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, but after six months of recovery he is 100% ready for the new season of the club.
In the mid-year window, Corinthians took advantage of the instability between Russia and Ukraine due to the war between the two countries and agreed the return of Balbuena and Maycon. The Paraguayan defender’s first spell at Timão was between 2016 and 2018, and he is on loan from Dinamo Moscow until July 2023 at club Parque São Jorge.
Maycon, on the other hand, is Cria do Terrão and was important in São Paulo titles in 2017 and 2018, as well as Brasileirão in 2017. He was loaned by Shakhtar Donestsk to the alvinegro club until the end of 2022. Balbuena as Maycon.
