Henry Cavill’s departure from DC only confirmed that Warners will be overhauling its entire superhero universe, but what can we expect from this fresh start?
Just like in the comics, DC in theaters can’t stay away from a crisis. But while comics have classics like Crisis on Infinite Earths, the film division is locked in an eternal cycle of managerial, administrative and creative issues that have held back the development of a cohesive cinematic universe for more than a decade. And, again, we are faced with promises of reformulation, a fresh start, and good stories to come.

- What changes for DC heroes with the merger of Warner and Discovery?
The most recent chapter of this soap opera came out last week. As people prepared their spirits for the arrival of Christmas, the confirms that Henry Cavill will no longer be Superman in cinemas and that, moreover, the idea is to give up everything we have seen so far and start almost from scratch.
It was news that generated quite a stir among the actor’s fans, but it didn’t necessarily come as a surprise. After all, he was already so far away from DC that the real news came when we saw him return as the Man of Steel in the post-credits scene of black adam🇧🇷

Point is, Cavill’s final farewell marks the massive back-and-forth that has become DC in recent years, something DC Studios’ new CEOs have vowed to end. James Gunn and Peter Safran have vowed to clean up this mess, even if they have to give up some compromises in the process.
pressing reset
This whole soap opera involving Schrödinger’s Superman – in which Cavill was and wasn’t Superman at the same time, it demonstrates just how chaotic the backstage of the then-DC Extended Cinematic Universe (DCEU) was. In the absence of anyone to guide the course of these stories, everyone made an assumption and this culminated in this confusion cost the role of The sorcerer🇧🇷
For this very reason, the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran as CEOs of the new DC Studios is a welcome promise of change in that regard. And, while Cavill’s (new) resignation and possible reboot of everything we’ve seen so far may be regretted by many people, it’s a necessary sacrifice to put this mess in order.
Gunn has already signaled that the idea is to reboot the now unique DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) from scratch and introduce new versions of characters we already know. And that includes a new Superman who he says will be a younger version of the character.

What does it mean? We don’t know yet, as Gunn has been pretty vague in explaining him. In your profile on Twittercommented that a new Man of Steel feature film is already being prepared and that the idea is to show an early stage of his heroic life, showing how he will become the great symbol that everyone knows, which is a very different approach from what Cavill presented so far.
According to the head of the DCU, the project is still in the early stages of development and he himself is writing the script, but so far there is nothing very concrete. However, this is an important sign of things to come. After all, in no uncertain terms, Gunn confirmed that the idea is to reboot DC in theaters and start all over again.
On his social media he said yes structure the DCU for the next 10 years and that the first details on these projects are expected to be revealed in early 2023.
Still, what little he’s signaled already shows that Warner seems to realize there’s no way to create the cohesion he intends in the current state of his cinematic universe. While Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa and Gal Gadot have their legions of fans like Superman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman, the legacy of Zack Snyder it did not work.

The greatest example of this is the black adam🇧🇷 The film starring Dwayne Johnson was seen as this soft reboot, i.e. leveraging a lot of what was already established, but trying to organize the future around it. It didn’t do very well, and even with all the hype caused by Henry Cavill’s appearance, the film only made $389 million at the box office.
The film’s poor performance appears to have served to justify the reset James Gunn intends to give DC. It’s proof that you can’t get ahead by recycling ideas and approaches that haven’t worked. Everything must be torn down to rebuild from scratch.
And Superman being the first heralded in this revamp is quite symbolic: he is DC’s first hero and great symbol and, therefore, it makes perfect sense to head up this new phase of the studio – a phase that we hope will be filled with hope.
So far, nothing has been said about new castings for Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and The Flash, but it’s entirely possible we’ll see something like this appear soon. Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins have already left parting messages, signaling that this renewal has already taken place, but has not yet been made official.

And as sad as it is to say goodbye to the likes of Wonder Woman and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, it’s a necessary move to make the new DCU work the way everyone has come to expect. It’s something comics themselves have shown us a few times: classics like Crisis on Infinite Earths they can only arise when one is willing to do away with what existed before in order to put the house in order. The old must die for the new to be born.
What’s next
In this sense, the next projects already signed by James Gunn and Peter Safran are not a cause for concern, after all we don’t even know what they are. The great unknown is precisely in those films that we know are already ready and which are derivatives of this “Snyderverse”.
It is the case of The flash🇧🇷 Aquaman and the lost kingdom and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which are slated for a 2023 release and are meant as a way to continue the already defunct DCEU. So much so that the film starring Ezra Miller was another promise of a new beginning, since the idea of joking with reality was the ideal excuse for a soft reboot.
The point is, that won’t happen again, and even with the various re-shoots the production has had to go through, it’s very likely that both he and these other films are stand-alone, farewell stories to an already doomed universe — much the same as it was with dark phoenix for the franchise X-Men🇧🇷
Parallel to this, we have the film of Blue Beetle, which has never been part of the DCEU and, precisely for this reason, we don’t know what to expect from it. It’s still in production so far, but nothing has been said about whether it will connect to the universe James Gunn is building or whether it will be a standalone story.
