US population growth advances in 2022 driven by immigration

US population growth accelerated in 2022 from the slowest rate on record, driven by net international migration, recovering after a slowdown triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic, the US Census Bureau said Thursday.

The country’s population grew 0.4% this year to 333.3 million, after nearly stagnating with a 0.1% increase in 2021 as the coronavirus exacerbated a more moderate growth trend in previous years. .

The year 2021 marked the first time since 1937 that the U.S. population grew by less than 1 million people, reflecting the smallest growth in numbers since at least 1900, when the census began estimating annual population.

Net international migration – the number of people entering and leaving the country – added about 1.01 million people between 2021 and 2022 and has been the main driver of growth, the census said in a statement on Thursday. This compares with net migration of more than 376,000 the previous year, signaling a possible return to pre-pandemic levels.

Florida was the fastest-growing state in 2022, with its population increasing 1.9 percent to about 22.2 million, census data showed.

“While Florida is often among the highest earning states, this was the first time since 1957 that Florida was the state with the highest percentage increase in population,” said Kristie Wilder, demographer for Census Population. Division.

Eighteen states experienced a decline in population in 2022, compared with 15 and the District of Columbia (DC) the previous year.

California and Illinois experienced six-digit declines in resident populations. Population declines in both states reflected net migration to other states.
