As ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ continues to blow up around the world, James Cameron has indicated that he’s planning more for the future.
The writer-director told Entertainment Weekly that he filmed scenes for the proposed “Avatar 3” and “Avatar 4” at the same time as the recently released sequel. He did this to keep the younger cast members from aging, citing Netflix’s “Stranger Things” as an example of the passage of time problem.
“Way of Water” introduces Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, who was seven when he was cast and is now 13) and Spider (Jack Champion, who was 12 when he was cast but is now 18). Because Champion was “growing like a weed,” the second, third and first acts of the fourth film had to be shot in a single production, Cameron said.
“Otherwise you get – and I love ‘Stranger Things’ – but you get the ‘Stranger Things’ effect where they should still be in high school [mas] They look like they’re 27,” Cameron said. “You know, I love the show. It’s okay, let’s suspend disbelief. We like the characters.
Producer Jon Landau also revealed in the same article that the upcoming films will feature new biomes. “Each film will introduce audiences to new clans, new cultures on Pandora,” said Landau. “Once a character is introduced, it remains part of the ongoing evolution. Let’s just add to it. Therefore, you can expect to see the Metkayina you met in this film in later films. There are other clans that we will introduce in movie three that you will see in movie four and so on.
So far, ‘Avatar: Dawn of Water’ has generated $168 million domestically and more than $500 million worldwide.
