The move is a reaction to the Taliban’s ban on women.
Three foreign NGOs announced this Sunday (25) the suspension of their activities in Afghanistan due to the Taliban’s decision to ban women employed in international organizations.
In a statement, NGOs Save the Children, the Norwegian Refugee Council and Care International said they would suspend their programs until “this announcement is clarified” and called for “men and women to continue saving lives in Afghanistan”.
“We cannot effectively reach children, women and men in need in Afghanistan without our women’s teams,” the organizations stressed.
Last Saturday (24), the Taliban regime issued an order banning women from working in foreign NGOs, just four days after Islamic fundamentalists banned female students from universities.
The Afghan government has even threatened to suspend the licenses of entities that do not comply with the new rule. The Taliban say they have received “serious complaints” that NGO staff did not adhere to the Islamic dress code.
The group returned to power in Afghanistan in August last year, after the chaotic withdrawal of troops from the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and has promised to be more flexible towards women.
However, little by little, he began to implement increasingly severe measures, moving closer to the hardline regime that marked the Taliban’s rule in the country between 1996 and 2001.
“The European Union strongly condemns the Taliban’s recent decision to ban women from working in national and international NGOs,” said a spokesman for the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell. 🇧🇷
