Leaving Juventus, president Andrea Agnelli said on Tuesday his decision to step down as top manager at the Italian club was not easy to accept and he remains convinced he did the right thing.
“Besides loving Juventus, in recent years I have done my best to achieve results on and off the pitch,” Agnelli told shareholders meeting in Turin to approve the team’s results for the fiscal year ending in June. which saw €238 million in losses.
Juventus, Italy’s most successful club, has come under scrutiny by Italian prosecutors and market watchers for alleged fraudulent accounting, prompting its board to resign last month. The prosecutors have asked for the indictment of Agnelli, 11 other people and the company itself.
Agnelli said that by stepping down, he wanted to avoid any risk that people would think his personal situation might influence the club’s decisions.
“Juventus comes before everything and everyone”, he said, adding: “I am strongly convinced that I have acted correctly in recent years and that the accusations made against us are unfounded”.
Exor, the Agnelli family business and controlling shareholder of Juventus, presented its candidacy for the club’s new board of directors on Monday, to be appointed at the shareholders’ meeting scheduled for January 18.
The new board, made up of accounting, auditing and law professionals, will be reduced to five members from the previous 10.
