The Argentine midfielder may have played his last game before moving to Chelsea
There is a farewell atmosphere in the Encarnados. Benfica coach Roger Schmidt has admitted that Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez could leave the Lisbon club in January, after last Friday’s game against Braga in the Portuguese league. The 21-year-old player and world champion of the Albiceleste national team is expected to join Chelsea in January, according to the European press.
The midfielder, who has recently returned to Portugal after celebrating the world title with the Argentina national team, played in Benfica’s last match, against Braga, in which they ended up losing. According to Schmift, Fernandez didn’t want to take the field.
The Argentine midfielder would have already warned last Friday that he wanted to go to Chelsea and had already given the go-ahead after receiving the proposal from the Blues. Benfica’s German coach says he’s not sure Fernandez will stay at Encarnado. The Portuguese side have strongly insisted that the youngster stay longer at the club, despite the Londoners having offered €120m for the player.
Enzo Fernandez was one of the highlights of Argentina’s third world championship. He made five starts and scored in the second round against Mexico and assisted in the victory over Poland. Enzo Fernandez was elected revelation player of the last World Cup.
