Madison Keys gave the American team a much needed second win as they face Great Britain in the next round
After an easy loss to Jiri Lehecka, of the Rep. Czech, Alexander Zverev, 12th in the world, showed his frailty again this Sunday evening, Monday afternoon at the United Cup in Sydney, Australia.
The former top 3 lost against the American Taylor Fritz, in ninth place, for 2 sets to 0 with partials of 6/1 6/4 after 1h04min duration.
Fritz dominated the first set, opened 5-0 and after so much effort the German played the first game and the audience applauded. Zverev’s face on the pitch and as he sat on the bench with his team and his brother Mischa Zverev was one of desolation. So much so that several times they haven’t even spoken to each other during breaks.
Fritz broke in the third game of the second set and led the serve without difficulty until closing 6/4.
Zverev is playing in his first tournament since returning from an ankle injury picked up in the semi-finals of Roland Garros in early June. He admitted he was still in pain until mid-December and was still off the pace.
Shortly after Fritz’s victory, Madison Keys, 11th, confirmed her favoritism towards Jule Niemeier, 65th, scoring 6/2 6/3. This Monday’s 2-0 score gave early qualification for the United States who will face Great Britain in the next stage. This Tuesday’s matches will be held and will only be worth ranking points and cash.
