Dovizioso says MotoGP’s new format will benefit fast riders in qualifying

Andrea Dovizioso believes MotoGP’s new format for the 2023 season could benefit those riders who are faster in the standings. According to the Italian, however, the introduction of sprint races in all stages from this year onwards will put additional pressure on the competitors.

The queen class Motorcycle World Championship will introduce a radical change of format this year in response to the drop in attendance at the racetrack and also in viewers of the Europe.

But, contrary to what was originally announced, the new dynamics of MotoGP it does not have the support of all the teams, as at least Lin Jarvis, Yamaha director, has already publicly admitted that he would prefer to see the sprint racing system tested in some races before being fully adopted.

Retired since the middle of last year, Andrea agrees that adopting the new format will give MotoGP a new dynamic, but doesn’t see much of an impact in terms of entertainment.

“It will create more dynamics to control, but I’m afraid it won’t change the show much,” Dovizioso said in an interview with the German Motorsport Magazin. “Physically it will be more difficult to tackle two races, it will be more difficult especially when the race is on tracks that require a more committed riding style. austin, Sepang, Assen or mugello”he opined.

Dovizioso also believes that the format will benefit the best riders in qualifying, who will be able to take advantage of those who are more methodical in Saturday’s races.

“In my opinion, it will put the riders under pressure,” he assessed. “However, this new regulation could also be an advantage for the fastest riders in qualifying, who, being able to start in the first positions, will be able to take advantage of the easier conditions that can benefit them in the race, which can lead them to earn more points than the more methodical riders” , he concluded.
