The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office of São Paulo has opened an investigation into the conduct of the Jovem Pan group in its coverage of terrorist acts on Sunday (1/8) in Brasilia. In a note, the Attorney General specifies that the company “has systematically spread fake news and speeches that violate the institutional order” and cites in particular the transmission carried out during the invasion and looting of the buildings of the STF, the National Congress and of the Planalto Palace.
“The focus of the investigation will be the broadcaster’s dissemination of false news and abusive comments, especially against the established powers and the organization of democratic processes in the country,” the MPF-SP said in a statement.
Jovem Pan News selected extremist Paulo Figueiredo for his coverage of terrorist acts. He is the same commentator who recently defended a civil war in the country. In his first broadcast rally, Figueiredo said the popular uprising was “understandable,” and even criticizing the destruction caused by the Bolsonarists, he tried to portray the attackers as supposed victims of the system. “The revolt is legitimate,” he said of terrorist barbarism.
In addition to Figueiredo, the MPF-SP appoints Alexandre Garcia and Fernando Capez in its action. The MPF cites speeches made during the coverage of the proceedings to support the contention that Jovem Pan made speeches that “downplayed the institutional disruptive content of the proceedings and sought to justify the motives of the criminals who invaded and destroyed the headquarters of the three Powers.” .
According to the indictment, the irregularities will result from last year. In support of the thesis, he cites three episodes. On November 14, commentator Rodrigo Constantino discredited the election result, attributing Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory to “sleight of hand”. On December 21, Zoe Martinez defended “that the military remove the ministers of the STF”. And the next day, Paulo Figueiredo defended “so that there is a civil war.”
It is also worth mentioning that Tiago Pavinato mocked and made obscene gestures during the transmission of a speech by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, the STF and the STE, to Lula’s diplomacy.
This Monday (9/1), the president of Grupo Jovem Pan resigned as head of the company. The businessman Antônio Augusto Amaral de Carvalho Filho, known as Tutinha, will be replaced by Roberto Araújo, former CEO, who will now have to answer to the MPF-SP.
Despite relinquishing command of the company, Tutinha remains Jovem Pan’s majority shareholder.
