Expert shows how orthopedic pillows can relieve back pain or even solve the problem
Poor posture in everyday life can generate, in addition to back pain, a series of spinal problems. According to Fiocruz (Oswaldo Cruz Foundation), approx 36% of the Brazilian population suffers from chronic back pain. The WHO (World Health Organization) points out that even 80% of the world’s population suffers from the same discomfort. Including, WHO says 8 out of 10 people will develop lower back pain at some point in their lives.
An audience that suffers a lot from back pain, especially in the lower back, is that of pregnant women. This happens due to physical and hormonal changes in the body, as the belly increases. According to the portal Drautius, a survey carried out by the “Revista Brasileira de Anesthesiologia”, it is estimated that half of pregnant women suffer from low back pain during pregnancy or in the puerperium. According to the survey, among pregnant women at an older age, there is an increase in this figure to 65%.
Cadu Ramos, a physical therapist and consultant for Theva, a company that sells mattresses, pillows and cushions, points out that lower back pain is often due to excessive activity with mechanical overload. “With that, people are destroying the structural part, damaging the joint too much, as a result there is also nerve pressure and disc herniation,” he notes.
Ramos recommends the use of orthopedic pillows to help reduce or even eliminate back and postural pain. “People have ‘wrong’ sitting habits, especially at work. Cushions help correct the position of the lumbar spine by improving posture, relieving or even eliminating pain in the spine,” he says. “Also, pillows can better mate our structures and position them better, thus bringing more comfort and pain relief.”
Theva physiotherapist explains the difference between pads and the purpose of each one. “The seat cushions facilitate good posture practices, relieve pressure in sensitive areas and bring more comfort to those who sit for a long time. The back cushions are excellent allies for those who sit for a long time, they help maintain good posture and they provide adequate support to the spine,” he points out.
According to Ramos, there are different models of seat cushions, such as the oval one (with or without hole), the one for the coccyx, the one for therapeutic support, among others. As for the backrest, there are models of lumbar support, cushions to place on the car seat and also those in the shape of a triangle for support when sitting on the sofa or bed.
