Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia played hard, but couldn’t resist and was eliminated from the WTA 500 in Adelaide at dawn this Thursday. After more than two and a half hours of competition, the Brazilian was defeated by the Spanish Paula Badosa, by tight partials of 7/6 (7-5) and 7/5, and she said goodbye to the competition.

Yet Bia can skip a place in the world rankings and reach 14th place. For that to happen, she just hopes your tormentor falls in the semi-finals of the tournament. Badosa, current champion of the circuit, faces the Russian Daria Kasatkina in the next stage.

The Brazilian Luisa Stefani, on the other hand, had the partnership of the North American Taylor Townsend to guarantee herself a place in the WTA final in the women’s doubles category. They defeated Czechs Miriam Kolodziejova and Marketa Vondrousova, 6/2, 6/3.

This will be Stefani’s fourth decision since last September. The tennis player, who was absent for months due to knee surgery, was crowned champion in the three finals in which she participated: in Pune, with the Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski, in Guadalajara, with the Australian Storm Sanders, and in Montevideo, alongside the Rionese Ingrid Martins.

In the final, the duo will face the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and the Kazakh Elena Rybakina, who beat the Ukrainian Lyudmila Kichenok and the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the other semifinal. The game takes place this Friday.

Matos falls in the quarterfinals

Brazilian Rafael Matos, in turn, was not so lucky. Together with the Spaniard David Vega, the gaucho lost to the Croatian Ivan Dodig and the North American Austin Krajicek, and did not go beyond the WTA quarterfinals in the men’s doubles category.

The setback came with the partials of 6/3 and 6/4, in just over an hour of play. The winning duo will take on No. 1 seeds Dutch Wesley Koolhof and Britain’s Neal Skupski in the next round.
