THE Formula E will start. After a long wait, new cars, teams entering and leaving, new names and a lot of movement in the market, the World Championship of electric single-seaters arrives in Mexico City, this Saturday (14th), for the first of 18 races scheduled for the 2022 season -23. .

THE BIG PRIZE evaluated the 22 names that make up the grid to highlight the status that each one carries before the start of the championship, whether it is a favorite name, who finished last year on a high, who is in a neutral state and even those who they are experiencing a low moment and the need to prove that they still deserve to be on the grid.

Edward Mortara

At 35, Edoardo Mortara is no stranger to Formula E. He improves year on year, coming from two very strong seasons, but which didn’t lead to a title, with a second place in 2020-21 and a third place in 2021 – 22. He remains with the same team, now called Maserati, and given the performances of both in recent years, it’s hard not to mention Eddy as a candidate.

Stoffel Vandoorne

Difficult not to place the current champion as a title contender, but Stoffel Vandoorne’s mission is not the easiest, given that only Jean-Éric Vergne has won consecutive titles in the electric championship. Even outside of Mercedes, who have dropped out of the championship, the expectation is that the Belgian can give a lot to DS Penske, which has attracted a lot of attention before the start of the season with investments.

René Rast

DTM legend, German René Rast has never impressed in Formula E, despite the little experience he had in his time at Audi. Despite this, the 36-year-old German is McLaren’s bold project, making his championship debut this year, and also deserves a mention in the list of drivers who can lift the title this season.

Mitch Evans

New Zealander Mitch Evans is a curious case in Formula E. It is difficult to find a driver who has been so regular and consistent in the category in recent years, but who lacks small adjustments to win the cup. After a four-win season and second-place finish, there’s no way not to pin the Kiwi on this list as a favorite.

Jean-Eric Vergne

It is not wrong to point to Jean-Éric Vergne as the greatest driver in the history of Formula E, but it is a fact that he has had more complicated years of late, despite recovering well last season. The duo with Vandoorne at DS Penske tends to be one of the strongest on the grid, and the 32-year-old Frenchman is also on the shortlist.

Abt debuts in Formula E as its own team, now without the support of Audi

Robin Frijns

Robin Frijns has long been among the best Formula E drivers, but the streak that has lasted since 2019, at the New York eP, has put the Dutchman a bit behind. However, he has left Envision and is done with Abt, in a new chance to try and enter the fight for victories.

Luca Digrassi

Lucas di Grassi is one of the biggest names in Formula E history, but let’s face it, he needs a little push to get back to the rhythm of his early years in the category, where he often fought for the title. After a positive spell at the Venturi, he signed with Mahindra to be the star of the team and remain among the riders fighting in the category.

Pascal Wehrlein

The German Pascal Wehrlein is a very talented driver and, despite some behavior problems, he is gradually evolving in the category. Last season he took off his first victory patch and was in the top 10 in the championship for the first time. Now, once again at Porsche, the mission is to keep improving to be on the podium more often.

Nick Cassidy

New Zealander Nick Cassidy is another who is slowly evolving in Formula E. He also scored his first win in the category last season, with a victory in New York. With a renewed contract in Envision, the mission is to try to get into the top 10 of the championship and be at the top of the category more often.

Jake Dennis

Briton Jake Dennis arrived in Formula E with a bit of a crooked nose, but he soon adapted very well to Andretti and became a frequent name among the best drivers in the category. A repeat challenge for the 2020-21 title may be too much, but there are good things to expect from the Brit.

Neutral

Dennis rode the Andretti in 2022 and stood on the top step of the podium in London

Jake Hughes

Jake Hughes rose to fame for his long campaign in Formula 3 between 2016 and 2020. After an unsuccessful move to F2, he got the chance to be part of McLaren’s ambitious project. It is a rather curious test of the British.

Born a Norman

Frenchman Norman Nato has the opportunity to return to the grid this season. After a lackluster spell at Venturi that ended in a win, he emerged as a replacement at Jaguar late last season, and his decent performance racing with little preparation convinced Nissan to give the 32-year-old a job.

Sacha Fenestraz

Partner of Born in Nissan, Sacha Fenestraz is one of the youngest drivers on the grid. The Frenchman is one of those cases of a driver who, after not having great opportunities there in Europe, grew up very well in Japan and secured a place with a Japanese car manufacturer for his first opportunity on a big stage.

Nico Müller

The Swiss Nico Müller is one of those cases of drivers who are very good at something who have never entered Formula E. In his case it is the DTM, but despite this he has had a new chance after the bad transition of Dragon years ago, closing with ABT .

In the low

Buemi alongside Sylvain Filippi, his new boss at Envision

Sebastián Buemi

Despite being a historic name in Formula E, Sébastien Buemi is not having his best phase in the category. He comes from two seasons so low that he ended up leaving Nissan, the team he has been with throughout his career in the championship. Now at Envision, he’s on a mission to prove he still belongs on the grid.

Sam Bird

Sam Bird is another who has had very good years in Formula E, being constantly in the fight for the title, but losing quality year after year. In 2021-22, he had his first winless season in Formula E and has to answer to Jaguar this season.

Oliver Rowland

Briton Oliver Rowland did very well in the pandemic year of Formula E, where he took his only victory, but let’s face it, he has never shone much in the category. Now with Lucas di Grassi alongside him at Mahindra, he has to fight not to be completely sidelined again.

Andre Lotterer

Lotterer arrived in Formula E with a lot of baggage from the history he has built in endurance racing and, despite racing for important teams such as Techeetah and Porsche, he never lived up to expectations and even won. Now to Andretti, he has to prove that he belongs on the grid.

Dan Ticktum

After a strong campaign in Formula 2, Dan Ticktum arrived in Formula E with some expectations of growing up and becoming a star in the championship, just like Mitch Evans. The problem is that the first experience in the weak NIO was bad, and he needs a strong year to prove that he belongs on the grid.

Maximilian Gunter

German Günther attracted attention in 2020 when he had a good season for BMW, but the pace seen that year was not matched in the following seasons, which led to a very bad year for Nissan. Now at Maserati, he’s on a mission to prove he’s still worthy of being in the championship.

Sergio Sette Camara

Sérgio Sette Câmara’s experience in Formula E has not yet been the best after very bad years with Dragon Penske. At NIO, there’s a chance in a not-so-better car to show that Brazil still has a name ready to be on the grid for the long term.
