Iran Executes British-Iranian Accused Of Espionage; The UK condemns the “barbaric” act.

Iran has executed a British-Iranian national who once served as Iran’s deputy defense minister, the Iranian judiciary said, defying calls from London and Washington for his release after he was sentenced to death on spying charges for account of Great Britain.

The United Kingdom, which declared the case against Alireza Akbari politically motivated, condemned the execution, with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak calling it “an insensitive and cowardly act carried out by a barbaric regime”.

Akbari, 61, was arrested in 2019.

Iran’s Judicial News Agency Mizan reported the execution without saying when it took place.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said on Friday that Iran could not proceed with the sentence.

In an audio recording purported to be from Akbari and broadcast by BBC Persian on Wednesday, he said he had confessed to crimes he did not commit after lengthy torture.

“Alireza Akbari, who was sentenced to death on charges of bribery and extensive action against the internal and external security of the country through spying for the British government’s secret services … has been executed,” the said. Mizan news agency.

Sunak said on Twitter that he was “horrified by the execution”, saying Tehran “has no respect for the human rights of its own people”.

Cleverly said in a statement that it “will not go unchallenged,” later announcing that the UK had imposed sanctions on Iran’s attorney general.

The British statements on the case do not address the Iranian allegation that Akbari was spying for the UK.

Iran’s foreign ministry briefed the British ambassador on Saturday of what it called London’s “encroachment on the realm of Iranian national security,” according to the state-run IRNA news agency.
