It’s official: Amy Winehouse’s film is coming. The deluge of biographies of emblematic musicians does not seem to end (especially with Elvis acting for the Oscars and I want to dance with someone currently in theaters), and production has now begun on a film version of the life of Winehouse, a stunning young talent who took the British music scene by storm, fought battles against drugs, the tabloids and society at large ( as described perfectly in Asif Kapadia’s poignant documentary Amy), and died much prematurely at the age of 27. The biopic will be titled return to blackafter Winehouse’s second album (and hit song of the same name), and features Marisa Abela as the singer herself, and you can see her as Winehouse in the image above.
The film comes from acclaimed director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who is in shape when it comes to music-based films, having directed the John Lennon-centric film. Tramp boy. Indeed, return to black sees her return to work with Tramp boy writer Matt Greenhalgh, who provides the script here. As for Abela, she is best known to the general public for her role in the hit TV show Industryand will soon be seen in Greta Gerwig Barbie. A statement about the film says so return to black “It will highlight Amy’s extraordinary genius, creativity and honesty that has permeated everything she has done. A journey that has taken her from the madness and colors of 1990s Camden High Street to worldwide adoration, and back again. The intention is her, she says,[crash] through the celebrity looking glass to see this journey behind the looking glass, to see what Amy saw, to feel what she felt.
The film is backed by the Amy Winehouse Estate and will feature her songs, which Taylor-Johnson says will be central to the film. “My relationship with Amy started when I left university and frequented the creative district of Camden, London. I got a job at the legendary KOKO club and can still breathe in every market stall, vintage shop and street,” she wrote in a statement. “A few years later, Amy wrote her deeply honest songs while living in Camden. Just like with me , it became part of her DNA. I first saw her perform at a talent show at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho and I immediately knew she wasn’t just ‘talented’…she was fantastic. As a director, you couldn’t ask for more. I am thrilled and honored to have this opportunity to bring Amy’s beautiful, unique and tragic story to the cinema along with the most important part of her legacy: her music. I am fully aware of the responsibility, together with my writing collaborator , Matt Greenhalgh, I will create a film that we will all love and cherish forever.Just like we do with Amy.
Production on the film is about to start, so wait return to black for it to hit screens at the end of 2023 or until 2024.
