M3GAN Was “Much Bloodier” Before It Goes Viral, Says Writer

In a recent interview, Akela Cooper, the screenwriter of M3GAN, revealed that the robotic doll was much more violent in the original production script.

About to debut in Brazil, the long-awaited M3GAN had to undergo a major narrative change when its trailer went viral on social media. That’s because, according Akela Cooperthe screenwriter of the feature, told the The Los Angeles Times (via People), the plot should have been “much bloodier”.

Exploring the universe of killer toys, M3GAN tells the story of Cady, an eight-year-old girl who receives a very realistic robotic doll from her aunt. Programmed to protect the child, M3GAN creates a unique type of connection with the little girl and, with that, everything changes shape.

Second Akela Cooperthe initial idea of ​​the script for M3GAN was that the doll was much more lethal and merciless than it actually is in the film. The obstacle? The way the production trailer went viral on social media, after netizens started to create memes with a killer doll scene.

Once younger audiences became interested in the film — when a dance M3GAN took over the web — the script for the feature had to be changed so that teenagers could watch it. Luckily, the director Gerard Johnstone assured that “an unrated version” will also be released.

“No hints for UniversalI love the studio, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teens got involved and you want them to be able to see the movie.” Cooper. “There should be an unrated version at some point. I heard it’s in production. But yes, the feature was much bloodier. Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie.”

Curiously, M3GAN had killed off so many characters in the production’s original script that the producer himself James Wan asked for some changes. “She killed a lot of people, including some characters that James he was like, ‘I like what you did to those people, but I want them to live.’ I was ruthless, but then again, that’s me. My mood is extremely dark.”
