Marvel Studios has released an excerpt from Dr. Strange in Many Worlds of Madness, where Stephen Strange uses his power to fight a giant monster.
A few days before the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel Studios just released an excerpt from Sam Rhyme’s film.
Stephen Strange, still played by Benedict Cumberbatch, meets a one-eyed monster breaking through the streets of New York. The magician then uses his magic to save America Chavez (performed by Hochitl Gomez).
This video reveals a little more about Shuma-Gorat, the lord of chaos. This demonic creature is Strange’s recurring enemy in the comics.
First appeared in 1973 in comics Marvel Premiere # 10 By Steve Englehart and Frank Bruner, this monstrous extraterrestrial sphere appeared on Earth millions of years ago to feed humans. The exiled demon tries to return to Earth in the old spirit (played by Tilda Swinton’s first Dr. Strange).
It was first seen on the screen at the end of the first episode of the series What if …?, And then in the trailer for Multiverse of Madness the monster changed its name between comics and screen adaptation. The latter is really called gargantos in MCU. The name has already been given to the 1969 Marvel comic book monster Submarine.
Why is this name changing?
Despite its name, the creature looks more like a Shuma-Gorat than a “real” Gargantos. So why this change?
The reason is simple, Marvel does not own the rights to Shuma-Gorati. The name of the character is indeed taken from the novelist Robert E.. From the work of Howard, who created Conan the Barbarian In 1932 and renamed it Shuma-Gorati.
In the 1970s, Roy Thomas, with the consent of Stan Lee, decided to adapt Howard’s work into a comic book. Creators Marvel premiere Decide to take this monster and look at it by Master Stephen Strange in their comics.
But Marvel has since lost its rights and therefore can no longer use the creature’s name. That’s why the studio named the multidimensional monster Gargantos.
Which does not seem completely absurd since in the comics Sub MarinerGargantos takes on the name of Atlantis, part of the Illuminati Secret Society, known for entering the MCU through Dr. Strange into a multiverse of madness.
Recall that this team consists of Iron Man, Mr. Fantasy, Namor, Black Arrow, Professor Xavier, and Dr. Strange.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released in theaters on May 4th.
