After denouncing the distrust, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arranged a meeting with the commanders of the armed forces, in the midst of a crisis in relations with the military.
The meeting is organized by the defense minister, José Múcio Monteiro, and should take place by next Friday, the 20th, according to the chief of staff, Rui Costa. At the meeting, Lula is expected to talk about strategic projects for the Navy, Air Force and Army that require government investment, as well as addressing the military’s position in the invasion of the Planalto Palace.
This Tuesday 17, Costa attended a lunch with Monteiro and the commanders, in a first attempt to bring the government closer to the barracks. The meeting took place after Lula took office Stage who have lost faith in the military and say the Forces are “not the moderating power they think they are”. The government also today exonerated more than 40 soldiers who worked at the Alvorada Palace and at Granja do Torto.
In a conversation with the press, Costa denied that the meeting was an “affectionate” event for the Armed Forces and denied that the relationship with Lula was discussed at lunch. However, he preached that institutions cannot remain “contaminated”.
The minister also downplayed the dismissal of military personnel, which he classified as “natural”. Did anyone think we would go into government and keep advisers from the previous government? If the philosophy (of the government) has changed, those who implement it must change,” Costa defended.
