Knives Out: Director Says What He Will Avoid Doing In Third Film

After the release of Glass onion: a knife-edged mystery on Netflix, director and writer Rian Johnson revealed that he was avoiding one thing before writing the screenplay for the third film in the mystery film series.

Speaking to Deadline, Johnson said that while he hasn’t started the writing process Knives out 3, he won’t be thinking about specific actors to cast when he does. “No, I’m just starting to brainstorm ideas now,” Johnson said.

She continued, “I try my best not to think of actors too specifically when I write because I don’t want to be heartbroken when they’re not available. Right now I’m just starting to dredge up what’s going to be fun to do next, so we’ll see.”

Johnson went through a similar process when initially casting the character of Benoit Blanc. The director has stated that the role was not written for Daniel Craig and that he “wrote the character in a vacuum” with no actor in mind. Instead, when Craig was brought on to play the role of a private detective, he simply adapted to the role and little change was needed.

“It’s not like we changed the dialogue or the script or anything – it was just Daniel who took on this role and gave it his vibe that instantly brought it to life,” Johnson said. “No need for an eye patch, thank goodness.”

Johnson may not have specific actors in mind for his casting, but he jokingly admitted he’d like to see his lead character, Benoit Blanc, come face-to-face with the Muppets. He called it “a good idea” and also hinted that he’d like to see Kathyrn Hahn in Muppet form as well. The Muppets, however, aren’t confirmed for any upcoming movies and Johnson himself was clearly joking about the possible casting of Kermit and co.

Glass Onion followed the success of its predecessor, Between Knives and Secrets, as it became the third most-watched film in a 10-day period on Netflix. Having originally been released for a limited run in theaters in November 2022, the film broke records upon its release on the streaming platform in December of the same year.

In total, the film was viewed 82.1 million times in the first 48 hours. He has also been nominated for 73 different awards, including two Golden Globes.
