Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett explained that they wanted to ‘tweak’ the franchise’s formula in Scream 6
One of the most anticipated horror movies of 2023, Scream 6 promises to be the “most aggressive” and “raw” production in the history of the franchise, marked by the iconic villain Ghostfaceaccording to the directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillettwho will return to office after the success of Scream 5 (2022).
During an interview with NME, the duo of filmmakers commented on what to expect from the production (without giving spoilers, of course) and explained how they wanted to change the franchise’s formula a little. “Part of our task in Scream 5 it was playing the greatest hits, to really show how we were part of a long lineage of characters. With the sixth feature, we wanted to subvert that warm blanket and create something grittier and rawer,” he said. Gillette.
It’s relentless and really visceral. there is much more than Matt and me in this movie. I think we had to Scream 5 to feel permission to do this.
“It has all the ingredients, all the things we love about the franchise, but it has a slightly different attitude. We think people are going to be really excited about it,” he continued. In addition, the directors asked if the new film would have more deaths than Scream 5marked by having the lowest number of deaths in the entire franchise (there were eight).
“I don’t think we can answer that without giving away a spoiler. But apart from that tyler just said, this one is definitely more brazen and aggressive than the last one. So, you know, wink, there’s a body count on this one,” replied Matt Bettinelli-Olpin.
