José Múcio said issues such as encampments and attacks on tri-power headquarters damaged relations with army command
Defense Minister José Múcio confirmed, after a meeting with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, that the dismissal of the army commander, general Julius Caesar of Arruda this Saturday, the 12th, is due to a “fall of confidence” on the part of the government in him. “Evidently, after these last few episodes, the question of the camps, the question of January 8, the relationships, mainly in the command of the Army, have suffered a fracture in the level of trust,” said Múcio.
As discovered by StageArruda was cleared due to a combination of factors, including the former army commander’s refusal to allow arrests in the field in front of the army headquarters on the night of January 8, when the attacks took place at Praça dos Tres Poderes.
“We had to stop him at the very beginning of this episode, also to be able to overcome this episode,” said the minister, in a statement released to journalists at Palazzo Planalto.
Múcio also confirmed that he had dealt directly with Arruda about the sacking and introduced his replacement, the general Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva, who held the post of military commander of the southeast. “We spoke today with the general who was in command at the beginning, General Arruda, to whom I give my best references. And that is why I wanted to introduce his replacement, General Tomás, who is now the new commander of the ‘army,” the minister said, without answering questions from the press.
