The villain of ‘The Batman’ played by Colin Farrell will have his own spin-off in the form of a series for HBO
The arrival of James Gunn to DC to make a clean slate has the DC Extended Universe upside down, and right now we do not know which characters and which actors will continue and which will be replaced or eliminated. But, among all this fuss, we can rescue a certainty: the universes parallel to the DCEU of Robert Pattinson’s Batman and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker will continue their course apart from the rest.
‘The Batman 2’ and ‘Joker 2: Folie a Deux’ will be released without Gunn putting a hand in their production and their universes won’t get mixed up with whatever new direction DC takes.
But before ‘The Batman 2’ arrives, HBO will premiere a series about the villain of the first, The Penguin, which will serve as a bridge between the two films. Matt Reeves, director of the films and executive producer of the series, has commented that production will begin soon and that “there are a lot of things that we want to do with the series and with the form of how it will lead to the sequel (of ‘The Batman ‘)”.
Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepotbetter known as ‘The Penguin’, one of Batman’s most iconic villains who, in addition to appearing in ‘The Batman’, was key in Tim Burton’s Batman movies with Danny DeVito embroidering the role.
‘The Penguin’, Release date
Filming begins in 2023, according to Colin Farrell “in February or March”. Therefore, we can safely assume that the series premiere on HBO Max will happen. throughout 2024.
On duration, Farrell has stated that will be “6 or 8 hours“: “I read the first episode and found it as delightful and unusual as the character that was in the Matt Reeves movie. It will be, I think, six or eight hours.”
‘The Penguin’, Synopsis
The Batman spin-off will be closely tied to theatrical releases, and will continue the story of The Penguin right where we left off.
Reeves explains that “There’s actually a small set of things we want to do, and we have to figure out how that will lead to the sequel, and what that sequel is going to consist of.”
That is, the series will be a kind of prequel to the sequel (I don’t know if you follow me). Which means that fans who want to fully understand the Battinson movies will also have to watch all of the spin-offs.
‘The Penguin’, Cast
At the moment, the only confirmed cast member other than Colin Farrel (obviously) is Cristin Milioti (‘How I Met Your Mother’, ‘Palm Springs’), who will join the series as none other than Sofia Falcone, daughter of the infamous Gotham City mob boss, who was played by John Turturro in the Reeves film.
‘The Penguin’, Trailer and images
At the moment there is no image of the series, since it has just started its production process. We will be attentive to any news to update this article as soon as there is news.
