‘The Fabelmans’: This is how Paul Dano and Michelle Williams became Spielberg’s parents

The great favorite for the Oscars is a semi-autobiographical account of the filmmaker’s childhood.

Although in Spain we are still waiting to be able to enjoy the new Steven Spielberg film (on February 10), ‘The Fabelmans’in other countries such as the US its release to the domestic market with extras in the form of behind-the-scenes clips is close.

in one of those featurettes we can check how it was the process of turning Paul Dano and Michelle Williams into Burt and Mitzi Fabelman, the parents of Spielberg’s own alter ego.

“I provided both actors with what I consider to be a treasure trove of personal memories for me, not knowing if those memories would have any kind of personal connection to Paul or Michelle,” Spielberg says in the bonus. “They are the stories of what my father did as a computer scientist and what my mother did as a housewife and concert pianist.“.

By inspiring them with the actual images of his family, Spielberg likely contributed to both actors being in talks for the 2023 Oscar nominations.

Williams, who plays Mitzi, further added that the tapes she watched resonated with her channeling her character, especially when it came to hearing Spielberg’s mother laugh. “I had many beautiful home movies of her and many images that were so dear to me that I watched them over and over and over again.laughing at different ages of her life,” said Williams. Based on Spielberg’s own mother, Mitzi plays a central role in Sammy’s (Gabriel LaBelle) journey through history because of her passion for the arts. However, his role in the story changes drastically when Sammy discovers a hidden family secret.

I think it is pure and beautiful that this man [Steven Spielberg] You have chosen this moment in your life to open your heart. To us, the actors who play her family, but also to a wider audience with her vulnerability,” Williams added in an interview with Digital Spy.

One of the first tapes I heard of Arnold [el padre] says something like, ‘Electronics was a way of life for me‘” Dano adds. “And right there, it was like, ‘Okay, this guy is an engineer to the core.’ He was a computer engineer. That’s in every fiber of him, from when he was a kid building radios, so that immediately I began to connect that part of me with that part of him“.

‘Los Fabelmans’ starts as one of the main favorites for the Oscars 2023, and is also one of the last films in which we can enjoy the music of John Williamswhich will presumably retire after ‘Indiana Jones 5’ later this year.
