The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) expressed its “full support” on Wednesday for Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, after weeks of anti-government protests that left dozens dead.
In the video appearance, Boluarte told the council meeting in Washington that he had asked Peru’s Congress to approve snap elections “as soon as possible.”
Congress must call a second and final vote to ratify the snap election, moving it from 2026 to April 2024.
However, there is mounting pressure to bring the election forward even further as the death toll rises during several weeks of social unrest.
