after 2022 marry me, we can safely say that Jen-aissance’s rom-com is in full swing. Despite crook has proven that Jennifer Lopez in a dramatic role is a force to be reckoned with, there is a certain joy in seeing her return to her Hollywood debut as a romantic lead.
forced marriageJ-Lo’s not-so-secret weapon is, of course, J-Lo herself, who easily balances overworked girlfriend, action hero, and dope in her own right. She and Duhamel have tangible comedic chemistry, whether it’s joking and bragging before a particularly tense moment, or settling more emotionally resonant disputes about their different approaches to marriage. There’s an interesting thread somewhere about how Tom is obsessed with perfecting his grand traditional weddings and Darcy’s reluctance to participate in them, but the incisive comments about gender dynamics aren’t what is expected of a young girl. Do you want to have fun and forced marriage almost delivery.
Outside of Lopez and Duhamel, the supporting cast provides quality ensemble, though Jennifer Coolidge as Carol, Tom’s eccentric mother, is definitely the star. With relatively few scenes, she steals the show: her line of “Check all the ditches!”, Darcy’s father Robert’s (Cheech Marin) repeated sale to pirates, and his skill with a machine gun are the highlights. . . Elsewhere, D’Arcy Carden does her best as Harriet, Darcy’s thin, astrology-obsessed stepmother, but Lenny Kravitz, while exceptionally elegant, is rather stiff as Sean, a covert and troublesome old flame. .
The plot is quite minimalist: a wedding takes place, pirates appear, the bride and groom have to defeat the pirates, in order to spend more time enjoying humorous scenes and scenes that don’t always land. Physical comedy, slapstick, and relentlessly ridiculous stunts are definitely where forced marriage is in its prime, though there are plenty of character nuggets scattered throughout that provide a satisfying third-act payoff. It’s no rom-com revelation, but it’s a fun vehicle for the ever-charismatic Jennifer Lopez and, frankly, that’s it.
