Original Blade Star destroys Marvel’s reboot: ‘They can’t even find a director’

Stephen Dorff, star of the original film Lama 1998 attacked the reboot of the Vampire Hunter story to be done within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Mahershala Ali occupying the lead role.

Based on the comic book character created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan, the first film in the trilogy Lama featured 1990s action star Wesley Snipes in the lead role, while Dorff starred as the film’s main antagonist, Deacon Frost. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film performed well at the box office and spawned two more sequels, as well as a short-lived television series starring Kirk “Sticky” Jones. In 2019, Marvel Studios officially announced that they would be rebooting this story, this time with Mahershala Ali in the lead.

While Wesley Snipes himself has already given Ali his blessing to take over the role of the character, it seems that Dorff isn’t remotely enthusiastic about the prospect of the upcoming reboot. Calling most modern superhero movies “useless trash,” Dorff offered a scathing rebuke to the MCU’s current plans to Lama while you talk to The daily beast. In hinting that the new film won’t live up to the Stephen Norrington-directed 1998 original, the actor says the Ali film “will be a laughingstock to everyone.”

“Marvel is used to tearing me apart anyway. How’s that movie PG [a classificação indicativa livre com supervisão dos pais] in Lama for you, who can’t have a director?” laughed the actor. “Because anyone who goes there will be laughed at by everyone, because we’ve done it before and made it the best. There’s no Steve Norrington around.” Norrington was the director of the first original film.

Dorff’s most recent comments come from an earlier controversial statement the actor made about playing Scarlett Johansson in Black Widow of 2021. Dismissing Johansson’s Marvel solo outing as “a bad video game,” Dorff said he’s embarrassed for Johansson and the film’s other stars, including Florence Pugh, David Harbor and Rachel Weisz. Dorff’s inflammatory comments quickly went viral after being made public, prompting a flood of public backlash from angry fans.

Dorff later backtracked on his comments about the Black Widow, revealing that she has not actually seen the film and stating that her words were a result of her bad mood at the time of the original interview. She also insisted that Johansson was an “old friend” and felt guilty about what he said. Still, Dorff’s most recent rant would suggest the actor’s feelings about Marvel’s current film offerings haven’t changed.

Originally scheduled to be released this November, the reboot of Lama from the MCU is now slated to hit theaters in September 2024. Admittedly, the film faced a tough pre-production. Although the original director, Bassam Tariq, stepped away from the project a few months before production started, the film is now in the hands of Yann Demange.

It’s also been hinted that since Demange took over as director, the new Blade film has been remade to favor an increasingly darker approach more in line with the original films. Whatever Dorff hints at the upcoming MCU reboot, Marvel fans will be eager to see what Demange and Ali bring to the property when Lama it will finally hit theaters next year.
