IOC considers allowing Russians to participate in 2024 Games
Ukraine on Monday called the International Olympic Committee (IOC) a “promoter of war and destruction”.
“The CIO is a promoter of war, murder and destruction. It watches with pleasure as Russia destroys Ukraine and then offers the Russians a platform to promote genocide and encourage more murder. Of course, Russian money buys hypocrisy, competition doesn’t smell like Ukrainian blood,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mikhaylo Podolyak said on Twitter.
Ukraine’s scathing accusation against the IOC comes shortly after the sports body said it was considering how Russian athletes could compete at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
The committee would not rule out the possibility that Russians and Belarusians may receive authorization to hold the Olympics under a neutral flag.
Last week, Kyiv sports minister Vadym Guttsait said Ukraine would consider a possible boycott of the Olympics if the IOC allows Russians and Belarusians to participate in the mega sporting event.
In February, when Russia invaded Ukraine, the IOC retaliated by banning the country’s athletes from participating in international sporting competitions, but that appears to be no longer the case almost 12 months later. .
