After announcing mass layoffs of 4,000 people in October last year, Philips has cut more than 6,000 jobs
Another week, more news of mass layoffs at a major technology company. This time it’s Dutch Phillips, a manufacturer of sanitary equipment, which announced on Monday (30) the cutting of 6,000 jobs worldwide. It’s worth noting that the company already laid off 4,000 employees last year, totaling 10,000 job cuts in less than six months.

Philips is still suffering from the global recall it had to carry out in 2021, due to problems in devices for treating people with sleep apnea. Patients were at risk of “possible toxic and carcinogenic effects” if they inhaled or ingested pieces of the sound-absorbing foam that detached from the devices. In addition to spending on products and collecting and trading them, the company has faced a number of lawsuits in the United States.
Headquartered in Amsterdam, Philips accumulated net losses of approximately 105 million euros (R$ nearly 580 million) in the fourth quarter of 2022, with a total loss of 1.605 billion (R$ 8.84 billion) in the whole senior year — thanks in large part to the recall.
“2022 has been a very challenging year for Philips and our shareholders. We are taking decisive steps to improve our effectiveness and urgently increase revenue,” said Roy Jakobs, CEO of Philips. And the expectation is that other cuts will be announced in the coming months, given that the “difficult but necessary reduction in the workforce” should take place by 2025, according to the executive.
