Authority Explained: Meet DC Studios’ astounding new super team

When it was announced that James Gunn would be hired to lead a new vision for the DC Universe, it was clear he was heading into unexpected territory. Even if there aren’t too many of them Batman movie, there are many new avenues to explore in bringing DC’s wide variety of characters to the big screen. Fortunately, the man behind Guardians of the Galaxy AND Lollipop I’ll never stick to the obvious choices, and The Authority, announced this week as a major film in DC’s upcoming slate, is a surprising and exciting choice.

Along with fellow DC Studios CEO Peter Safran, Gunn revealed that this year’s edition Fast The film will usher in a new era for DC, and from this moment (flash), DC movies, shows and games will unite into one big universe, and the first part will be called “Gods and Monsters”. Among the ten projects announced are many godlike beings in the form of Supergirl, a new Superman, a new set of Green Lanterns, and more, as well as monsters like the Swamp Thing and animated creature commandos. As for The Authority, the brutal team of superheroes could be called gods or monsters depending on their mood on any given day.

Still intrigued? Gunn described The Authority’s screen debut as a “big movie” about him and Saffron’s overall plan, so let’s take a closer look at the team, who they are, and why the Justice League should be concerned. . It’s like this. A (wild) storm is approaching.

What is Authority? The tumultuous history of comics…

Before we get into the Authority itself, let’s start with a little background. In the 1990s, when edgy anti-heroes like Spawn were all the rage, comic book legend Jim Lee founded an imprint called Wildstorm Comics where he started a spunky superhero team called Stormwatch. When the interest for storm watch began to decline, most of the team being killed off except for a few heroes who later formed their own team in Washington after the company bought Wildstorm Comics in 1999. What team? Authority.

AS sentinels Before, authority – originally written by Warren Ellis – was a comic designed to subvert superhero conventions, consisting of a parallel lineup of Marvel and DC’s Mightiest Heroes of Earth (read on for more). ). But unlike the characters in Watchmen, The Authority actually has humanity’s best interests in mind; they really want to save the day. They don’t care who gets hurt along the way.

Fans loved it and it didn’t take long before that authority has become more popular than storm watch Ellis left the book with issue #12, however, and that’s when some of comics’ greatest talent stepped in, including Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, and Tom Taylor, as well as legendary artists like Frank Quitely, Dustin Nguyen, and Gene. Oh. Unfortunately, most attempts to keep authority going long fell apart after the first two volumes.

Eventually, the Wildstorm universe was merged into regular DC continuity breaking point in 2011, connecting The Authority with other heroes like the Justice League who helped inspire its creation in the first place. And of the flash the film is ready to take over breaking point story, the stage seems set for something similar to happen on the big screen, bringing The Authority to the DCU.

Who are the DC heroes in The Authority?

The original lineup was led by Jenny Sparks, also known as “The Spirit of the 20th Century”. You think of Marvel’s Captain Britain, but less good and more brutal. Born in England in the early 1900s, Jenny interacted with many of history’s most famous figures before using her electrical powers to lead the first incarnation of the Authority following the disappearance of Stormwatch. Sparks was supposed to die around the turn of the century in the original 1999 version, so expect the live-action version to change that quite a bit, timing-wise.

Then we have Jack Hawksmoor. As a child, Jack was experimented on by futuristic beings who linked his essence to the urban environments around him. This means that Jack can read the energy of cities and communicate with buildings, giving him all sorts of strange gifts, such as the power to glide on concrete. As mayor of the people of the city, Jack can’t survive for long once he stumbles upon a rural setting, but a very literal feeling in the lugar de una manera de oh Dios-dónde-est-el-Starbucks -closer .

One could argue that Kevin Feige’s empire wouldn’t be what it is today without the Authority. If DC can harness that power as well, it could be a big hit.

Apollo is basically the Authority’s version of Superman. The two share nearly identical powers, including flight, superhuman strength, and the ability to shoot solar energy from their eyes. What makes Apollo unique are his lovely white locks and the fact that he is gay. Also known as the Sun King, he is married to his teammate, Midnighter, who happens to be Batman’s equivalent of the Authority…

Midnighter got his powers, a key difference from the Dark Knight, through medical experiments, just like Apollo. These boons include super strength, super speed, and a fast healing factor that makes him nearly impossible to kill. What’s most impressive is its ability to predict how a fight will unfold before it even begins, analyzing all possible scenarios in an instant. He’s basically an updated, even more violent Batman.

Swift (no relation to Taylor) developed avian abilities when a meteor activated the genetic marker in her DNA. Unlike DC’s Hawkgirl, Shen Li-Men’s wings and claws are actually a physical part of her body, and at her top speed she can even outrun super speedsters in mid-air. As if that weren’t enough, Swift is also the navigator of The Carrier, a sentient spacecraft in which The Authority resides.

The Engineer, also known as Angela Spica, replaced the original Engineer (real name unknown), after her nanotechnology was fused to her body. Using the nanites in her blood, Spica can shapeshift and create solid objects out of nothing. That’s not all, though: the engineer is ridiculously overpowered, with all sorts of other abilities, including technopathy and radiation-induced telepathy. She, too, would probably lose track of everything she can do if it weren’t for her brilliant intellect.

There have been other members of the team over time, but most of this original roster should be the focus for first-timers.

Because it’s authority movie big deal?

The Authority may not be a household name, at least not yet. But the impact of comics on the industry has been significant, even influencing how Hollywood has handled its biggest comic book blockbusters. Fusing gritty heroism and original thinking with large-scale action sequences, authority Comics have capitalized on the appeal of basic super teams while deconstructing what made them so popular in the first place, not to mention co-creator Bryan Hitch later created a very similar series for Marvel called the last one, which laid the foundation for the MCU’s Avengers. One could say that Kevin Feige’s empire wouldn’t be what it is today without it authority. If DC can harness that power as well, it could be a big hit.

The live-action debuts of Apollo and Midnighter should also mark a significant change; even now, superhero movies still avoid having an odd focus. Things are (very) slowly improving in this regard, but the arrival of notable LGBTQ+ characters like Apollo and Midnighter will spur the making of blockbuster films to correct this imbalance.

Whatever the future holds, authority it was chosen on purpose. Yes, some DC regulars like Batman and Superman will return in this new phase, but there’s also a fresh focus on new faces like The Authority, who will shake things up and help differentiate the DCU from its rivals once again. what it’s like to come home early too). With the team being relatively unknown to cinematic audiences, the stakes are high in this exciting project, but that’s exactly what the DCU needs right now. Sure, The Authority might not be a safe bet, but they’re brave and daring nonetheless. And with no previous adaptations to fall back on, James Gunn and Peter Safran are ready to give us the definitive version of this team in their first ever live-action story.
