M. Night Shyamalan: “Dave Bautista could kill us all if he wanted to”

We spoke with M. Night Shyamalan of ‘There’s a knock on the door’ and his new leading man, the hulking Dave Bautista: “he’s prepared to take a risk.”

The premiere of ‘Knock at the door’ has allowed us to talk with its director in an interview to which he soon gave us a headline: M. Night Shyamalan assures that Dave Bautista could kill us all if he wanted to.

Luckily he does not want to, and it is that good old Bautista is one of those celebrities who makes himself loved. “Dave is a very special person,” Shyamalan says. “Going around with 300 pounds of muscle, being that big… Going through life knowing he can kill us all if he wanted to… That feeling of invulnerability makes him kind and seems to feel responsible for us.“.

Long before joining this project, forming part of the filmography of the director of some of the best films of the 21st century, this good-natured giant was better known as Batista, without the “u”, thanks to his facet as a wrestling fighter. For the decade leading up to 2000 he was one of WWE’s biggest stars, but luckily for the public outside of this glorious competition, the animal wanted more.

It was then that the cinema became his way out of the ring and, although titles like ‘Wrong Side of Town’ (David DeFalco, 2010), ‘The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption’ (Roel Reiné, 2011) and ‘House of the Rising Sun’ (Brian A. Miller, 2011) did not make it easy for him, his charisma in ‘The Man with the Iron Fists’ (RZA, 2012) and ‘Riddick’ (David Twohy, 2013) paved the way for him .

I think I’ve caught him at the perfect time in his life, he’s ready to take a total risk“, Shyamalan points out about an actor whose life was changed by Drax, his character in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (James Gunn, 2014), a front door entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Even now, when I send him messages, he asks me if he has been well, if he has done his job well, and I reply that he has been extraordinary in the film”.

He’s a very sweet man, I didn’t want to ruin my movie, that’s how he is and I wanted to do him justice“, says the person responsible for several of the best horror films in the history of cinema. “He is very open, when any of us takes risks like that, it is wonderful, and he is wonderful in the film.”

    knock on the door

Although we will not reveal yet if ‘A knock on the door’ sneaks into the best ‘plot twists’ of M. Night Shyamalan’s films, which it does we assure is the undeniable future of Bautista, a dedicated interpreter who, after winning the affection of the public in each shot of large productions such as ‘Spectre’ (Sam Mendes, 2015), ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ (James Gunn, 2017), ‘Blade Runner 2049’ (Denis Villeneuve, 2017), ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, 2018), ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, 2019), ‘Dune’ (Denis Villeneuve, 2021) and ‘Stabs in the Back: The Mystery of Glass Onion’ (Rian Johnson, 2022).

Now we can see his huge effigy again in ‘They knock on the door’ and, shortly, will return to the billboard in ‘A knock at the door’ (M. Night Shyamalan, 2023) and, shortly ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ (James Gunn, 2023), ‘In the Lost Lands’ (Paul WS Anderson, 2023) and ‘Dune: Part Two’ (Denis Villeneuve, 2023).
