To achieve just one image on a week-long D-Day, this scene was conceived thanks to a miniature version of a famous American building, measuring 3 feet by 1.5 meters, entirely in plaster. It is mostly shot from a low angle to make it more impressive, at 300 frames per second (for a normal movie it is 24 frames per second).
During a trip to Youngstown the day the film was released in the United States, US President Bill Clinton – who had seen it before – said in an interview: “If I’m here and not in Washington, it’s because the White House has to be destroyed by aliens today! I hope he’ll be here again when I’m back.”
