Phoebe from ‘Friends’ had a twin who appeared in another series: that’s how the programs connect

It’s been 29 years since ‘Friends’ premiered and it became a global phenomenon, but even though it has many fans, there are details that until now are little known to most.

One of those data includes the characters played by Lisa Kudrow in the series, who would like a reboot of “Friends”, namely: Phoebe and Ursula Buffay.

Phoebe was the friend who loved to play guitar, give massages and had a very happy and cheerful personality. However, several chapters also feature Úrsula’s twin sister, who is her opposite.

What many don’t know is that the character of Úrsula exists for a specific reason, since when Lisa Kudrow made her debut on ‘Friends’ she was on another series as well.

The series was “Mad About You,” which premiered on NBC in September 1992 and was about a newlywed couple in New York. In some scenes the characters frequented a bar called Riff’s.

There Paul (Paul Reiser) and Jamie (Helen Hunt) meet a rude and clueless waitress, who usually wears black, named Ursula.

But when ‘Mad About You’ was in its second season, Lisa was cast as Phoebe in the new NBC series ‘Friends’ which premiered in 1994.

  • Helen Hunt also stars in “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, which you can watch for free and in Spanish on ViX.

Not knowing if “Friends” was going to flop or succeed, and since both series aired on NBC, the actress hoped to keep both roles, but the schedules couldn’t match.

The situation proved interesting for co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane as they tried to connect the characters, as reported by Entertainment Weekly in September 2019.

“My husband Jeffrey (Klarik) was on ‘Mad About You’ as a writer. We had to go to (creators) Danny Jacobson and Paul Reiser for permission, and amazingly because of that relationship…they were incredibly generous and let us do it, which is crazy! I wouldn’t let anyone do that to a character on our show!” Crane said.

So “Friends” introduced Phoebe’s twin sister, and the connection became even greater when in episode 16 of the first season, Joey and Chandler go to the bar in “Mad About You” and meet Ursula.
