Demon Slayer – or Kimetsu no Yaiba, in the original Japanese – has 12 antagonists known as the Twelve Demon Moons. The organization brings together the 12 most powerful Oni of the work, who act under the orders of the Oni King, Muzan Kibutsuji. They are divided into two groups of six members: the upper moons and the lower moons.
The upper six moons are ranked according to their power level. The numbers indicate the position in the table and therefore how strong they are. In the following lines, the explains who is part of the upper moons and their powers. It is worth mentioning that this article may contain spoilers for the Demon Slayer anime and manga.
How strong are the upper moons
Each member of the higher moons has a level of power that far exceeds that of the minor moons. The Hashira – the strongest Oni hunters – eliminate many members of the Lower Moons, while the demons of the Upper Moons kill and eat many Hashira.
Oni Hunter Squad leader Kagaya Ubuyashiki states that it has been a hundred years since a member of the Upper Moons was killed following the defeat of Gyutaro and Daki. Meanwhile, the lower moons have been replaced numerous times.
Who are the Upper Moons
In order of increasing power, the current lineup of Demon Slayer’s Superior Moons consists of the following demons:
Upper Moon Six: Kaigaku

The Upper Moon Six is Kaigaku. This Oni was originally a member of the Oni Hunter Squad and one of the disciples of former Hashira of Thunder, Jigoro Kuwajima, as well as Zenitsu Agatsuma. After a battle against Kokushibo, the Greater of the Moon, he gave up for his life, becoming a demon.
Because he knows how to use breathing with full concentration, Kaigaku received more blood than usual from Muzan Kibutsuji, increasing his strength. As a Thunderbreath user, the Oni possesses lightning-fast speed and near-instantaneous reflexes.
Moon Upper Five: Gyokko

In the Upper Moon Five location is Gyokko, an Oni with the form of an abstract humanoid creature in white and without arms. On his body there are several children’s hands. One of his abilities is the ability to shapeshift to acquire amphibious traits similar to those of a merfolk. Before becoming a demon, Gyokko was a human named Managi.
His Blood Demon Art allows him to easily outrun common demons, gaining boons to overwhelm and kill Hashira as well. In addition to having superhuman strength and durability, Gyokko can shapeshift, covering his body in scales harder than diamonds. He can also turn his opponents into fish.
Upper Moon Four: Nakime

Nakime is Demon Slayer’s fourth Greater Moon. Using her Biwa, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument, she is able to summon both lower and other upper moons to the Castle of Infinity at the request of Muzan Kibutsuji. Before joining the organization, he was just an ordinary demon who helped the king of Onis.
Despite not being very skilled in physical combat, Nakime can use her Demonic Blood Art to control space and confuse opponents. After receiving more blood from Muzan, she was able to create eyeballs out of her body to observe and spy on people from a distance.
Moon Upper Three: Akaza

Number three among the upper moons, Akaza was originally a human named Hakuji. He was a prodigy martial artist who trained under Keizo, Koyuki’s father. Akaza’s main form of pleasure is challenging strong Oni hunters like Hashira to prove their superiority. In battle, he often praises opponents who can match his level.
Akaza possesses many powerful abilities, including martial arts prowess. With punches and kicks, she can surpass even Hashira’s swordsmanship. Additionally, his ability to sense fighting spirit allows him to predict attacks and discover opponents’ weaknesses, making him nearly unstoppable.
Upper moon two: Doma

Doma is second in the strength ranking of the Upper Six Moons. He is also the leader of the Eternal Heaven Faith cult, which exists to worship him. Members of this sect work by capturing and killing human women so that Doma can then devour them. At the beginning of Demon Slayer, the Oni was ranked sixth among the upper moons, but over time he has risen to the second rank.
Combining fighting skills and ice-based Blood Demon Art, Doma is powerful enough to defeat Hashiras without difficulty. Due to her skills in Tessenjutsu, Doma can perform eight to nine attacks with her fans in the blink of an eye and still generate huge blasts of air with them.
Upper Moon One: Kokushibo

Kokushibo is the strongest demon among the Upper Six Moons. Before becoming a demon, he was a human named Michikatsu Tsugikuni and part of the Oni Hunter Squad. He was one of the first breath users and is the older twin brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest Oni hunter in history.
He is a very powerful demon, second only to the king of the Onis, Muzan Kibutsuji. His physique is one of the greatest and best trained in existence, as in addition to being a full concentration Breath user, he is also a branded individual who can utilize the Transparent World technique. Kokushibo is also the demon who has more blood than Muzan among the members of the organization.
