After bringing “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and the emotional “The Whale” that earned Brendan Fraser an Oscar nomination, the company A24 is now betting on the content of a 17-year-old teenager.
This is Kane Parsons, a young independent filmmaker and special effects artist who recently gained notoriety thanks to his YouTube horror shorts ‘The Backrooms’.
The film follows in the tradition of adapting viral horror stories, such as the Netflix series “Archive 81” (2022), inspired by a podcast and produced by “Saw” franchise creator James Wan.
What is ‘The Backrooms’, the horror short to be made into a film?
The shorts became a viral sensation in 2022 when the first video was posted on Kane’s Pixels channel. The short quickly reached millions of views and the youngster already has 2 million subscribers.
His series of videos are made in the horror ‘found footage’ style (ie as if they were home videos) and are based on a 4chan photo released in 2019 that talked about the mystery of the liminal spaces of our reality.
Set in the 90s and showing creepy yellow corridors like offices, the short tells the story of a young filmmaker who ends up locked in the Backrooms and encounters beings from another world.

Without a big budget and using only the Blender program, Kane has already made several “The Backrooms” shorts to enhance the horror story, including an organization in the 1980s that opens a portal to the mysterious reality.
The series has 16 YouTube videos and more than 100 million views. “The Backrooms” has become so wildly successful, it has spawned other theories, related videos and images, and endless discussions and debates.
17-year-old Kane Parsons to direct horror film based on ‘The Backrooms’ shorts
As Deadline confirmed on February 6, 2023, it was this incredible popularity that brought “The Backrooms,” the chilling story of the Internet, to theaters with A24 and James Wan.
With his company Atomic Monster (which headed “M3GAN”), James Wan (“Aquaman” and “The Conjuring”) will executive produce. While A24 will be responsible for distribution.
The film will be directed by Kane Parsons himself, with a script by Roberto Patino. However, as Kane is still a minor and studying, the film will have to be shot during his summer vacation.
In addition to Wan, Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Alayna Glasthal will produce, while Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine will serve with 21 Laps Entertainment.
