Women receive only 8% of all royalties collected in the country

The report carried out by the ECAD itself reveals that, of the R$ 730 million transferred to the accounts of natural persons, R$ 58 million remained with composers, performers and instrumentalists

Women are far from earning the same amount as men earn from copyright in Brazil. The country that was configured as a land of female singers/performers (men are historically less visible in this area) and of male authors/composers (due to cultural issues linked to an intellectual dominance that would make some books sexist) today has a faithful portrait of his uncompensated artistic remuneration. the ECAD, Central Office of Collection and Distribution of Copyrightsreveals: of all that was paid in royalties in Brazil in 2022, he was left with only 8%.

The third edition of the report What Brazil Listens to – Women in Music shows that there was a 45% increase in what was distributed to women in 2021, the year stopped by Covid. Yet the abyss is deep. Out of a total of R$730 million transferred to individual accounts, women, whether they are composers, performers or instrumentalists, received around R$58 million. “The numbers are not in favor of women, but I believe that showing reality helps define the position we all need to take in our daily lives to balance this situation,” says Isabel Amorim, executive superintendent of ECAD. “Our work aims to bring this issue to market. At ECAD, our staff is currently 50% women and occupy 44% of leadership positions.”

Estadão exclusively received the ranking of the most played songs on streaming platforms in 2022. Of the 20 most played songs, only six have women as songwriters: Go home today, the best placed of them, fourth in the general classification, sees Bia Frazo sharing the paternity with four other names, all men. the following, The greatest wish, has Lari Ferreira sharing the rights with three authors, also men. 16th place is prepad and the 17th is from Everyone but you, both by Marília Mendonça and Maraísa. As for the most performed pieces at concerts, women appear as authors only three times in the list of 20, always alone and sharing laurels with many men.

The X-ray created by ECAD follows: “The presence of women in the ranking of the 100 authors with the highest copyright income in 2022 showed no changes compared to 2021: female representation was once again only 4% of the Total Covered Owners.” The amount of copyright income beneficiaries has more discrepancies. Of the four million owners registered as individuals, 400,000 are women, 95 percent of whom are affiliated as authors. That is, very few register as performers, instrumentalists or even phonograph producers.
